Ingredients and Substitutions
A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Butter - It is important to use unsalted butter in this recipe to avoid over-salting the brownies.
- Chocolate - The higher the cocoa content, the better your brownies will be. We used milk chocolate, as that is what the kids prefer, but using a good quality dark chocolate will give your brownies a real intense chocolate flavour.
- Sugar - We used light brown sugar as it gives a lighter texture and a caramelised flavour. You could swap it for caster sugar, but it would change the texture.
- Eggs - We used medium eggs. Using larger eggs would change the texture.
- Vanilla - Make sure you are using vanilla extract, not essence for a natural flavour.
- Flour - Plain (all purpose) flour.
- Cocoa powder - Use a high quality unsweetened dark cocoa powder.
- Salt - Salt is added to enhance the flavour of the brownies. Leave it out if you are using salted butter.
- Chocolate chips - Make them extra chocolaty by adding some dark chocolate chips. White or milk chocolate work too. We have more ideas below for other add-ins.

Serving Suggestions
There are so many ways that you can serve air fryer brownies, and here are some of our favourites.
Toppings
- Whipped cream: A dollop of whipped cream on top of your brownie is a classic choice. You can use store-bought whipped cream or make your own by whipping heavy cream and sugar together.
- Chocolate sauce: Drizzling some chocolate sauce over your brownie will take it to the next level. You can use store-bought sauce or make your own by melting chocolate chips and mixing them with cream. Why not try our Chocolate Sauce recipe?
- Fresh fruit: Adding some fresh fruit like strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries to your brownie is a great way to balance out the richness of the chocolate.
Accompaniments
- Ice cream: A big scoop of ice cream on top of the brownie is pretty much the perfect dessert. Vanilla or chocolate ice cream are both great choices.
- Coffee: A cup of coffee is the perfect accompaniment to a rich and decadent brownie. The bitterness of the coffee helps to balance out the sweetness of the chocolate. Why not try our Cinnamon Coffee recipe?
- Milk: A glass of cold milk is a classic pairing with brownies. The milk helps to cut through the richness of the chocolate. Our kids love this!
Storage
Store: These brownies will keep in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Freeze: Freezing brownies is great for portion control. Individually wrap them and put them in a freezer bag and they will keep for up to 3 months.
Defrost: You can leave them to defrost in the fridge.
Reheat: Warm these up in the microwave for 20 seconds before serving. SO good!
Extra Tips
- Make sure that the tin you are using fits in your air fryer basket. If you need to use a smaller tin to fit in, then you might need to adjust the amount of batter you can pour in and adjust the cooking time.
- Once the air fryer brownies are cooked, you MUST chill them. Leave them to cool at room temperature and then put them in the fridge for 4 hours or the freezer for 2 hours. They will be too gooey to eat right away.
- Don't over-mix your brownie batter, as that can cause them to crack.
- Why not add in a handful of walnuts to the brownie batter? It will make them harder to slice neatly, but it's a delicious addition.
- You can open your air fryer as many times as you like to see how the brownies are cooking. It won't affect how they cook.
Frequently Asked Questions
If your brownies come out undercooked, it could be because the temperature was too low or the cooking time was too short. It's also possible that the air fryer wasn't preheated long enough or you used a different pan to the one we did.
If the brownies are still undercooked after the recommended cooking time, try adding an extra 2-3 minutes to the cook time. If the brownies are still undercooked after that, try increasing the temperature by 10-15 degrees and cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes.
If the brownies come out overcooked, it could be because the temperature was too high or the cooking time was too long.
Also, every air fryer cooks differently so it's also important to check the brownies a few times during the cooking process to make sure they are not burning.
This recipe uses a metal 7x4 inch baking dish so the timings work for that exact tin. Depending on your air fryer and the dish you use, cooking times will vary. If you use a silicone insert they will take longer because they conduct heat differently.
Yes, you do! Usually I would say don't bother, but when it comes to brownies they need to start cooking straight away, so they need to go into a hot air fryer. Put the air fryer on for 5 minutes whilst you are making the batter to preheat it.
