Chocolate Covered Raw Brownies with a text title overlay.
Chocolate Covered Raw Brownies with a text title overlay.

If you are looking for a healthier alternative to brownies, then this is it! These Chocolate Covered Raw Brownies are made with ground nuts and naturally sweetened with dates. Some tahini makes them incredibly moist and fudgy and then they are coated in melted dark chocolate for the ultimate chocolate flavour. So easy to make with just 6 ingredients and super moreish!

A half eaten brownie ball sat on top of a whole one, with others behind them.

We almost couldn't stop ourselves from eating these. They are SO, so good!

The kids devoured them too and I was totally okay with that because they are packed full of nutrients and a much healthier version of baked brownies. They have lots of fibre and healthy fats!

These raw chocolate brownies need no baking, as it is just ground nuts, dates, tahini and cocoa powder all rolled together in a ball and then dipped in melted dark chocolate which gives it this delicious chocolate shell.

These raw vegan brownies taste far more indulgent than they actually are and there is very little hands-on time involved.

Ingredients and Substitutions

All the ingredients needed to make this recipe each with a text overlay label.

A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

  • Dates - Our latest obsession, so we are always looking for new ways to use them. They are the perfect natural way to add sweetness and fudginess to desserts. Use Medjool dates, as they are soft and have the best flavour.
  • Nuts - You can use any nuts for this raw brownie recipe. We used a mixture of hazelnuts, cashews, almonds, walnuts and brazil nuts.
  • Tahini - This is our "secret" ingredient and what sets them apart from bliss balls and makes them more brownie like. Adding tahini (a sesame seed paste) gives them a really moist and fudgy texture. You can use another seed or nut butter if you prefer, but the flavour of the tahini works really well.
  • Cocoa powder - This is where a lot of the chocolate flavour comes from. Use a good quality unsweetened cocoa powder. You could use cacao powder instead, but it would be more bitter.
  • Vanilla - This adds a real richness, and helps to intensify all the other flavours too. Use vanilla extract, rather than essence, as it has a natural flavour.
  • Dark chocolate - This is what all the brownie balls are dipped into. We used 80% vegan dark chocolate, however you could swap it for milk chocolate if you prefer.

Variations

This is such a simple recipe, that there isn't too much than you can change in it. However, we have a couple of variations for you.

If you wanted even fudgier brownies, then you could add some more tahini. Not too much, as you don't want them to be too wet to roll. Adding more tahini will give a stronger sesame taste, but some people don't mind that.

We rolled our raw brownies into balls, however you could press all the mixture into a lined brownie tin and then cut it into squares before dipping in dark chocolate so they look more like traditional brownies.

We sprinkled some crushed nuts over ours, but you could sprinkle over a little sea salt, which would really bring out the sweet flavour of the chocolate. For a pop of colour, you could sprinkle some freeze dried raspberries on top.

If you wanted a lighter brownie, then you don't have to dip them in melted chocolate. You can just roll the raw brownies up and leave them as they are. They still taste amazing.

How To Make Chocolate Covered Raw Brownies - Step by Step

Dates soaking in a bowl of water.

One: Soak the dates in boiled water for 10 minutes.

A clear ziplock bag containing crushed nuts.

Two: Put the nuts into a bag and crush them to varying sizes.

A food processor containing dates and crushed nuts.

Three: Drain the dates and put them into a food processor with the crushed nuts (save some nuts to sprinkle over).

Blend the dates and nuts to form a crumbly consistency.

Tahini added to the food processor.

Four: Add the cocoa powder, tahini and vanilla and blend again until the mixture comes together.

The date and nut mixture rolled into 20 balls.

Five: Roll the mixture into balls about the size of a table tennis ball. Put onto a lined baking sheet and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

One of the date balls being coated in melted chocolate.

Six: Melt the chocolate and dip the balls into it, coating each ball fully.

Crushed nuts topping the coated balls.

Seven: Sprinkle over the reserved crushed nuts and refrigerate until the chocolate has set.

Serving Suggestions

We would happily just snack on these raw chocolate brownies as they are. However, for the ultimate afternoon pick me up, then serve these with a hot drink.

Storage

Store: We have no idea what leftovers of these actually are, as they are that good! However, for research purposes I saved some to see how they stored. You can keep these in the fridge for up to a week in an air tight container.

Freeze: These actually freeze really well, and in the future I am going to have to do that with some of them. Out of sight, out of mind, right? You can put them in a freezer bag and they will keep for up to two months in the freezer.

Extra Tips

  • The best extra tip I can give you for these raw chocolate brownies is make more. Make more than you think you will need, as they will go very quickly! Did I mention how GOOD they are?
  • Make sure to use the best chocolate you can for this, as so much of the flavour comes from it. We prefer dark chocolate because it gives a really rich and intense flavour.
  • Any nuts will work in this recipe, so don't buy anything special as you can use whatever you have.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you roll them in melted chocolate?

I used a teaspoon to roll them in the melted dark chocolate and lift them out and on to the baking tray.

Can I make brownie bars?

Yes - you don't have to roll these into balls. You can flatten the mixture into a lined baking tray and then just drizzle with the melted chocolate.

Are these raw brownies vegan?

Yes, these are vegan and gluten free.

What to do with date water?

You can reserve the water used to soak dates and use it as a natural sweetener.
