Ingredients and Substitutions

All the ingredients needed to make this recipe each with a text overlay label.

A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

  • Chocolate - We used a bar of 80% dark chocolate and chopped it up. You could use dark chocolate chips for these Greek yogurt chocolate brownies. Make them even healthier by using Refined Sugar Free Chocolate Chips. You could use milk chocolate, but we prefer dark.
  • Coconut oil - This replaces the butter and we love the flavor that it adds. Only a little it needed to get the perfect brownie texture.
  • Greek yogurt - This is the star of the yogurt brownie recipe and what helps it to be low cal brownies, but still have an amazing texture. It also means you don't need any oil or butter. Use vanilla Greek yogurt for added flavor.
  • Egg - Use a medium sized room temperature egg.
  • Salt - This really helps to bring out the sweetness.
  • Oat flour - You can use any flour here, but we used oat flour to keep it gluten free. You could also use almond flour, but it would make these yogurt brownies more dense. You could also use all purpose flour if you didn't want them gluten free.
  • Cacao powder - You could use cocoa powder instead, but we like the nutritional benefits of cacao powder, as well as the intense chocolate flavor.
  • Milk - We used skim milk, but any milk will work.
  • Granulated sweetener - This is another way we have made with Greek yogurt brownies lighter. We have used stevia to sweeten ours, but any granulated sweetener or white sugar will work. We also like date sugar or coconut sugar. Changing this will change the nutritional values and sugar content.
  • Vanilla - Use vanilla extract, not essence, as it is natural and doesn't have artificial flavors.
  • Baking powder - This is what helps the yogurt brownies to rise.

Variations

When it comes to the perfect bake, you don't want to mess too much with it. However, there are few additions you can make.

Flavor - If you love chocolate orange or mint chocolate, then swap the vanilla or orange or mint extract. You could use almond extract too.

Mix-ins - There are SO many different options here. You could chop up your favorite chocolate bar and freeze it and then stir it into the batter. You could add walnuts or pecans in the mixture or why not add some Oreos on top?

What to Serve With Greek Yogurt Brownies

I'm not going to lie, these are pretty sickly (in the BEST way), so you don't really need to serve them with anything else. But, they are really good warm with some ice cream, cream, or custard.

If you are needing an afternoon pick-me-up, then have a square or two of these and a coffee like our Homemade Iced Latte or Cinnamon Coffee.

Extra Tips to Make the Best Healthy Brownies

  • Make sure you let the melted chocolate mixture sit for 2 minutes before folding it into everything, because you don't want the yogurt to curdle.
  • Your chocolate brownies with yogurt will still look a little wobbly/jiggly when they come out of the oven (but shouldn't be really wobbly), as they will still continue cooking as they cool down. You don't want to over-cook these.
  • Every oven cooks differently, so start checking on these at 25 minutes. They could also take up to 40 minutes.
  • You can use brown sugar in this recipe if you want a more caramlized flavor.
