What berries to use
This is a mixed berry crisp, as we have used a mixture of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. However, you could use blackberries too. We used an even mix of the 3 berries, however if your family have a stronger preference for one, then you could weight it towards that. Or just do a strawberry crisp.
Crisp topping
It wouldn't be a crisp without the perfect crispy topping would it. This topping is made with flour, oats, cinnamon, butter and brown sugar and then baked to crispy perfection. We used rolled oats for this recipe.
You could swap the cinnamon for ginger or nutmeg, or use a mixture of the 3. This topping isn't like a crumble which is just flour. We have used a mixture of oats and flour, which gives it that delicious crispy texture.
This topping also works really well on top of stewed apples too.
What to serve it with
Just like a crumble, this berry crisp is delicious served with custard or ice cream. If you are using ice cream, then keep it simple with a classic vanilla ice cream.
Using frozen berries?
You can use frozen berries in this recipe. That means that even when berries are out of season, you can still enjoy this delicious bake. You can make the recipe the exact same way with frozen berries, but you might need to give it a little more time in the oven.
FAQs
This dessert will store in the fridge for 2-3 days. Reheat in the microwave for 1 minute. Be aware that the berries with be VERY hot after reheating.
We wouldn't recommend freezing this dessert as once defrosted, the oats can go quite mushy.
