Ingredients and Substitutions
A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Cottage cheese - You can use low-fat or fat-free versions of cottage cheese - we used fat free to keep it lighter. However, keep in mind that the texture and flavour might be slightly different compared to the full-fat versions. Full-fat products tend to provide a richer and creamier dip.
- Lemon - Just a little lemon juice really lightens up this dip made with cottage cheese.
- Seasoning - Here is where you can get really creative. We used ranch seasoning, as it's an easy way to add a lot of flavour to things. However, you could just add some garlic and onion powder to it.
- Milk - This helps to thin the cottage cheese dip out a bit, depending on how thick or thin you want it.
- Fresh herbs - There is a lot of flavour from the dried seasoning, but some fresh coriander (cilantro) and parsley add some freshness. You could use basil, chives or dill instead.
Variations
Mediterranean Dip
Add ยผ cup of finely chopped Kalamata olives, ยผ cup of sun-dried tomatoes, and 1 tablespoon of capers. This variation pairs perfectly with pita chips or fresh vegetables.
Spicy Dip
Incorporate 1-2 teaspoons of hot sauce, ยฝ teaspoon of smoked paprika, and ยผ cup of finely chopped jalapeños. This spicy version is fantastic with tortilla chips or crunchy carrot sticks. A jalapeno ranch version of this healthy dip is SO good.
Extra Cheesy Cottage Cheese Dip
Why not stir some shredded Parmesan into the dip to make it extra creamy and cheesy?
Greek Yogurt Dip
If you don't want to use just cottage cheese, then you can do half and half with some fat free Greek yogurt. Make sure it is the really thick kind. It will have a bit more of a tart flavour.
How To Make Cottage Cheese Dip - Step By Step

Cottage Cheese Dip Serving Suggestions
Cottage cheese dip is incredibly versatile and there are so many things you can serve it with:
- Veggies: Carrot sticks, cucumber slices, bell pepper strips, cherry tomatoes, and celery sticks all go really well with this cottage cheese veggie dip.
- Chips: Pita chips, tortilla chips, and potato chips.
- Crackers: Whole grain crackers, rice crackers, Bagel Crisps, and pretzel crisps.
- Bread: Sliced baguette, Melba Toast, sourdough bread, pita bread and breadsticks.
- Fruit: Apple slices, pear slices, and grapes for a sweet and savoury combination. This doesn't just have to be a cottage cheese dip for veggies.
Additionally, this dip with cottage cheese can be used as a spread for sandwiches and wraps, or as a topping for baked potatoes. We love it spread on sourdough, with slices of heirloom tomato and a drizzle of olive oil. It also makes a great pasta sauce, especially for pasta salads.
You can thin out the dip with a little milk, buttermilk, or lemon juice to use it as a creamy salad dressing. Adjust the seasoning as needed to balance the flavours.
Extra Tips for a Dip with Cottage Cheese
- Once you have blended everything together and transferred it to a bowl, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This allows the flavours to meld together beautifully.
- If you prefer a chunkier texture, simply mix by hand and don't blend the dip ingredients.
- If you want to keep this dip really simple, then you could just blend the cottage cheese with some fresh dill - it will still taste great.
Frequently Asked Questions
Store the dip in an airtight container in the fridge. It will stay fresh for up to 3 days. Stir before serving to recombine any separated liquid.
To make a dairy-free cottage cheese dip, substitute the cottage cheese and/or Greek yogurt with plant-based alternatives. There are many dairy-free cottage cheese and yogurt options available made from almonds, cashews, or soy.
If your dip turns out too runny, you can thicken it by adding more Greek yogurt or by mixing in a small amount of cream cheese. Alternatively, draining the cottage cheese before mixing can help achieve a thicker consistency.
