Ingredients and Substitutions
A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Chicken - Skinless and boneless chicken breasts is what we used, and we cut them into thin strips.
- Peppers and onions - These are the traditional vegetables that you would find in chicken fajitas. Any colour bell peppers will work, but yellow, red and orange have a sweeter flavour.
- Oil - We used olive oil.
- Fajita seasoning - We make our own fajita seasoning and it really does make a difference as you can control exactly what goes into it. Whereas store bought seasoning tends to have lots of sugar and salt in it.
Variations
Meat - If you didn't want to use chicken, you could swap it out for prawns (shrimp) instead. They would cook much quicker and would only need about 4-5 minutes.
Vegetables - We kept these fajitas in air fryer traditional with the onions and bell peppers. However, you could add in some other quick cooking vegetables like mushrooms, courgette (zucchini) or aubergine (eggplant).
Spice - Our homemade fajita seasoning isn't very spicy, however if you are sensitive to spice, or serving this to your children, then you could leave the chilli out of the seasoning. That way, anyone that wants spice can just add some jalapenos on their air fryer chicken fajitas when serving.
How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Fajitas - Step by Step
- Step 1: Put the peppers, onion and chicken into a mixing bowl.
- Step 2: Drizzle over the oil and add the fajita seasoning. Mix well so that everything is coated.
- Step 3: Put the chicken and vegetables into your air fryer.
- Step 4: Cook at 200°C for 15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through.
Serving Suggestions
With all the traditional fajitas toppings of course!! Serve it in a soft tortilla wrap (why not try making our Wholewheat Tortilla Wraps) and then load it with whatever you like?
We went with our Restaurant Style Salsa, The BEST Ever Coleslaw and then some feta sprinkled on top.
Don't forget some tortilla chips on the side. Have you ever tried making your own? We have a couple of really simple recipes for you with our Air Fryer Tortilla Chips and Baked Tortilla Chips.

Storage
Store: Once totally cooled, you can store air fryer fajitas in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Freeze: You can put this in a freezer bag and it will keep for up to 2 months.
Defrost: You can defrost it in the fridge overnight.
Reheat: To reheat, you can place it back in the air fryer for 4 minutes, or until heated through.
Extra Tips
- Make sure all the chicken strips are cut evenly, so that they all cook at the same rate.
- Don't slice your onions and peppers too thin, as they will burn in the air fryer.
- Be generous with the fajita seasoning and make sure everything is well covered so you get that delicious smoky and spicy flavour in every bite.
- Try not to overcrowd your air fryer basket. You want to make sure that that air can circulate around the chicken and vegetables so they get a little bit of crisp on them.
- Add a squeeze of lime to the air fryer fajitas just before serving (not before cooking) to freshen them up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ours took 15 minutes to cook. However, every air fryer cooks differently and it will also depend on how thick you have cut your chicken strips. Your air fryer might cook this in as little as 10 minutes, so keep checking it frequently so you don't overcook.
The best way to ensure that it is cooked through is to use a meat thermometer. Chicken is cooked when it has an internal temperature of 75°C/167°F at the thickest part of the meat.
We really can't rate the Ninja Foodi Max Dual highly enough. It has a huge 9.5 litre capacity, it allows you to cook two different things at once and it has 6 different cooking functions. It is 65% more efficient than an oven and uses 75% less fat than traditional cooking. It is also dishwasher safe.
You can slice the chicken, peppers and onions in advance and keep them in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
