If you love picking up a hot and fresh rotisserie chicken from the deli or supermarket, then why not try this easy air fryer version. Air Fryer Rotisserie Chicken has all the flavours of a store bought one, but made at home in under an hour. Deliciously moist chicken with a crispy flavour packed skin.

About this air fryer rotisserie chicken

You can cook a whole chicken in the air fryer, but this isn't just any chicken. This has all the flavours you know and love from a supermarket rotisserie chicken, but much cheaper. This rotisserie-style chicken is SO simple to make too.

So, whilst technically this isn't a rotisserie chicken, as it doesn't rotate in the air fryer. It has all those smoky, garlicky and herby flavours from the spice rub and gets perfectly crispy in the air fryer.

Ingredients and substitutions

All the ingredients needed for this recipe each with a text overlay labels.
  • Chicken - We used a 1.5kg/3.3lbs chicken for making rotisserie chicken in the air fryer. The size of the chicken you use will depend on how many people you need to feed and the size of your air fryer basket too. Cooking time will vary though if you use a different size chicken.
  • Oil - We used olive oil.
  • Spice blend - This is where all the flavour comes from and gives it that rotisserie chicken vibe. Ours in a mixture of paprika, oregano, thyme, onion and garlic and then generously seasoned. You could add a little chilli in there too.

A full ingredients list with measurements is in the recipe card below.

How to make air fryer rotisserie chicken - Step by step

A small bowl containing a mixture of oil, herbs and spices.

One: In a small bowl, combine the herbs, spices and oil.

A whole chicken smothered in a spice rub.

Two: Pour about ¾ of the spice mixture over the chicken. Use your hands to rub it all over the chicken, coating all parts.

Three: Put the chicken, breast side down, into your air fryer.

Part cooked chicken in an air fryer.

Four: Cook at 190°C for 20 minutes. Flip the chicken over.

The remaining rub added to the chicken.

Five: Pour the remaining rub mixture over the chicken breast.

Fully cooked chicken in the air fryer basket.

Six: Cook for a further 20-30 minutes. Leave to cool for 10 minutes before slicing your air fryer rotisserie.

What to serve with air fryer rotisserie

We always used to buy a rotisserie chicken as part of our weekly meal prep, and then shred it up to add to meals over the next few days. But, now we make this air fryer version which is much cheaper and you can control the seasoning on it.

I like to add it to homemade flatbreads and serve it with slaw and some hot sauce. It's also good in our Healthy Chicken Caesar Salad.

It's also perfect in our Leftover Chicken Pasta or added to a curry or stir fry with our Healthy Teriyaki Sauce.

You also can't beat chicken and fries and our Homemade Oven Fries are just the BEST!

You can also use this for a roast dinner with all the sides like Air Fryer Roast Potatoes, Slow Cooker Red Cabbage and Honey and Mustard Roasted Parsnips.

Spice variation

You can really use any spice blend mixed with oil to rub over this air fryer rotisserie chicken. You could use a cajun seasoning, fajita or even an Italian seasoning. But the one we included in this recipes gives the most authentic flavour.

Storage

Store: This air fryer rotisserie chicken is a great recipe for meal prep, so if you have leftovers then slice it all off the bone (save the carcass to make Homemade Chicken Stock) and then store it in an air tight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Freeze: This does freeze really well. Portion it out, and then individually wrap each portion in film and then put in a freezer bag. It will keep for up to 3 months.

Defrost: Defrost in the fridge overnight.

Reheat: We either eat it cold in sandwiches or salads, or reheat it in something like a pasta sauce or stir fry.

Extra tips

  • Make sure you use the right size chicken for your air fryer, as all the baskets are different sizes.
  • If you have a really large chicken, then it is probably best to cook it in the oven as it might be a little snug for the air fryer. You can still use this spice rub for an oven roast chicken.
  • For a more warming flavour, you could add half a teaspoon of cinnamon to the spice mix.
  • You can also stuff a cut lemon into the inside of chicken as it adds a lovely extra subtle flavour.
  • Always make sure to let the chicken rest before slicing and serving. This helps the juices soak back into the meat and keeps it really moist.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the chicken take to cook?

This will depend on the size of your chicken, and the air fryer you have as they all cook at different rates. We used a 1.5kg chicken and it took just over 45 minutes. Yours might be cooked in 35 minutes, or it might take an hour.

As a rough guide, you will need to cook the chicken for around 15 minutes per 500g/1lb of chicken.

How do I know when the chicken is cooked?

The best way to ensure that it is cooked through is to use a meat thermometer. Chicken is cooked when it has an internal temperature of 75°C/167°F at the thickest part of the meat.

What air fryer should I use?

We really can't rate the Ninja Foodi Max Dual highly enough. It has a huge 9.5 litre capacity, it allows you to cook two different things at once and it has 6 different cooking functions. It is 65% more efficient than an oven and uses 75% less fat than traditional cooking. It is also dishwasher safe.

Why is my chicken dry?

Firstly, make sure that you aren't overcooking the chicken. Check the cooking time suggestions above for the size of your chicken. Also make sure that the chicken isn't too close to the air fryer elements at the top as this will dry it out. This will happen if your chicken is too big for your air fryer basket.
