Also known as air fryer egg in a hole, this might just be one of our easiest recipes yet. Why the air fryer? Well, when we are getting the kids ready in the morning, we don't want to leave a pan unattended, so we throw this in the air fryer and just leave it. We also love the texture of the bread and eggs in the air fryer.
Making egg toast in the air fryer isn't just for breakfast. We love it for an easy dinner, or when the kids are still hungry when they get back from sports clubs in the evening. Simple and nutritious comfort food.

Ingredients and Substitutions
A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Bread - We would usually recommend a rye or wholemeal sourdough when it comes to bread. But, because you need to squash some of it down to fit the egg into, it needs to be a softer bread. You could use a soft white sourdough, or any soft sliced bread.
- Eggs - 2 medium sized eggs. If you use large eggs, you will need to make sure the slices of bread are big enough to fit the eggs.
- Salts and pepper - Generously season. You could use our Everything Bagel Seasoning Recipe too.
- Chives - These add lots of freshness and color when serving.
Air Fryer Egg Toast Variations
We kept this really simple with just a few basic ingredients, but there are lots of ways you can make it a bit more exciting.
Seasoning - You could add a sprinkling of smoked paprika to this air fryer eggs on toast, or some red chili flakes on top.
Cheese - Who doesn't love cheesy eggs? Add some grated cheddar or some crumbled feta on top of the eggs before cooking.
Vegetables - Who doesn't love an opportunity to add more vegetables? You don't have a lot of room to play with when it comes to assembling these, but you have a little space. Why not try adding some chopped spinach, diced red onion or peppers or some tomato slices?
Meat - We don't think these are missing meat, but you could add some chopped ham or chorizo under the eggs.
How To Make Air Fryer Egg Toast - Step by Step
- Step 1: Using a flat bottomed glass or jar, press an impression into each slice of bread.
- Step 2: Put the bread slices into your air fryer basket. Carefully crack an egg into each impression at the center of the bread.
- Step 3: Air fry at 190°C for 8-10 minutes, depending on how you like your egg yolk cooked.
8 minutes will give you a jammy yolk, 9-10 minutes will give you a fully set yolk. If you want it runny, then check on it at 7 minutes. - Step 4: Season with salt and pepper and sprinkle over the chives.
Serving Suggestions
These eggs in a hole really have it all, and we usually just serve them with a drizzle of hot sauce and a coffee on the side.
However, if you are making these for a brunch, then you might want some sides to go with it. Why not try our Oven Cooked Bacon, Air Fryer Sausages or Baked Home Fries?
Extra Tips
- Use your fingers to press down the indent on the bread, to make sure it is a noticeable hole so the egg can sit in it.
- Some of the egg might overflow the bread a little. That's okay, as these are meant to look a bit messy.
- Keep an eye on these when cooking, as every air fryer cooks differently. They can go from nearly done to overcooked very quickly. Everyone likes their eggs cooked differently too, so if you want a runny yolk, then check them a couple of minutes early.
Frequently Asked Questions
This is best eaten right away. However, there is no reason why you can't turn it into a sandwich and wrap it up and eat it as breakfast on the go or add it to a lunch box.
Yes, you can make this in the oven. Cook at 200°C/180°C(fan)/400°F/Gas 6 for around 10 minutes, depending on how you like your eggs cooked.
You need to make sure that the indentation in the bread is wide enough for the egg to spread out. If it isn't then the white of the egg will be too thick in the hole and take longer to cook, and the yolk will overcook.
