This must have homemade seasoning recipe, especially if you are making bagels, is SO easy to make with just 5 ingredients and goes on just about everything. Everything Bagel Seasoning is made with ingredients you probably already have in your spice cupboard and is the perfect topping for homemade bagels, as well as on eggs, avocado toast and so much more.
We are obsessed with this everything bagel seasoning. Literally! We can't get enough of it and we are constantly finding new things to put it on.
So, why not make a double batch and find out for yourself just how good and versatile this seasoning is? Just 5 ingredients and less than 5 minutes to make.
Technically it's everything but the bagel seasoning, as there is no bagel here, but traditionally it would be the seasoning on top of a fresh bagel. In our option, it is the BEST bagel seasoning and always out go-to when in a bagel shop.
I always bring a couple of jars of this back from the States with me, as it just isn't a thing here in the UK. But, when I ran out of it I thought it must be easy to make myself and turns out, it is!

Ingredients and substitutions
- Sesame seeds - We used a combination of white and black sesame seeds.
- Garlic granules
- Onion powder
- Poppy seeds
- Salt - The slight pink tint you can see in the picture above is because we used pink Himalayan salt. Regular sea salt or Kosher salt will work just as well.

Serving suggestions
Everything! Put it on everything! Okay, maybe not ice cream. Firstly, make your own bagels and sprinkle it on top. Try our Easy Bagel Recipe or if you want something with added protein, then try our Cottage Cheese Bagels.
It also goes really well on avocado toast or scrambled eggs. Have you tried our Scrambled Eggs with Cottage Cheese yet?
You can put it on top of a baked potato, as a seasoning on top of soup, on a salad or even on popcorn for something a little different. It's a great way to add some extra flavour to roasted vegetables or even sprinkling on some homemade hummus.
Looking for a new way to season salmon or chicken breast? This everything bagel seasoning is the way to go!
Variations
The actual ingredients themselves are what they are, so I wouldn't change those. However, the great thing about homemade everything bagel seasoning, rather than store bought, is that you can control the ratios.
Want to use less salt or leave it out? You can! Want it to be heavier on the garlic? Add more! You could even add some red chilli flakes if you wanted to give it a bit of a kick of spice.
Storage
Store: Once you have mixed all your seasoning together, then you can transfer it to a jar and it will keep at room temperature in a dry place for up to 6 months.
Extra tips
- We like to use flaked sea salt, as it gives the bagel seasoning a big more texture, but if you only have coarse sea salt then that is fine. It will look like a lot of salt, but it's essential for that authentic everything bagel seasoning flavour.
- If you want to, you could toast the seeds before adding them to the mix, and it will add a bit more flavour, but you don't have to.
- However, if you are using the seasoning for bagels, do not toast the seeds first, otherwise they will burn in the oven on the bagel.
Frequently Asked Questions
I know that poppy seeds aren't available in every country, so if you can't get them then you could just leave them out or use chia or flax seeds instead.
If you are trying to be mindful of salt, then you could leave it out however it would not have the same flavour. You could always just add a pinch of salt.
Yes, you can and you should! Just mix everything together and make sure you have a jar bit enough to store.
