Ingredients and Substitutions

A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Water - We used a mixture of tap water and soda water as we didn't want it too fizzy. You can use just one though.
- Lemon juice - The amount needed will depend on how juicy your lemons are and how much lemon flavor you like. You can use bottled lemon juice, but freshly squeezed lemon juice works best.
- Blueberries - You can use fresh or frozen, but fresh will cook a bit quicker. Having the best flavor blueberries makes ALL the difference to this drink. So, if out of season then use frozen berries.
- Maple syrup - The blueberries add some natural sweetness, but we wanted to add some extra. Adjust this to your own tastes though. You can swap it for honey or agave.
- Mint - Pairs beautifully with the lemon. Basil works surprisingly well too for something a bit different.
Variations
Cocktail - If you want to make an adult version of this and turn it into a cocktail, then add a shot or two of your favorite spirit.
Berries - You can use other berries to make this too. Swap the blueberries for raspberries or strawberries and follow the same method for making the syrup.
How To Make Blueberry Lemonade - Step by Step

- Step 1: In a saucepan add the blueberries, maple syrup, mint and a splash of still water.

- Step 2: Heat for 5 minutes over a medium heat, gently pushing the blueberries down with a spoon.

- Step 3: Strain the heated blueberries through a fine-mesh strainer. Allow to cool. This is your syrup.

- Step 4: In a tall carafe, add the soda water and lemon juice.

- Step 5: Add some fresh blueberries.

- Step 6: Add the blueberry syrup and top up with still water.
- Step 7: Serve over ice with lemon slices and fresh mint as a garnish.
Dannii's Top Tip
- Always give the jug of drink a good stir before serving as the berries will settle at the bottom and the syrup and water can start to separate.

Frequently Asked Questions
You can store this in an airtight pitcher in the fridge for up to a week.
We have tried pureeing the berries in a blender before and whilst it does kind of work, the color is really dull. Cooking them and mashing them down and straining the syrup out gives it that really vibrant color. Cooking them released the flavor from the juice too.
