Ingredients and substitutions
- Canned potatoes - We bought the cheapest ones we could for this recipe, as we wanted to show just how budget friendly tin potatoes in air fryer are. But you could also use the more expensive canned baby potatoes.
- Olive oil - This is what helps the air fryer tin potatoes get nice and crispy. Use a good quality olive oil.
- Italian seasoning - Whilst you can keep this simple and just use potatoes and oil, some seasoning really does add some extra flavour and Italian seasoning is always our favourite. Carry on reading for more seasoning ideas.
- Parmesan - So, this is totally an optional extra and definitely makes air fryer canned potatoes less budget friendly, but it's totally worth it. It makes them a little more special.

How to make air fryer canned potatoes - Step by step
Prep: Drain and rinse the potatoes under cold water.
One: Put them into a bowl with the oil and seasoning. Toss well to fully coat all the potatoes.
Two: Put the potatoes into your air fryer. Cook at 190°C for 12 minutes, shaking halfway.
Three: Serve topped with grated Parmesan and chopped herbs (both optional).
Variations
This is a super simple recipe, so there aren't too many ways that you can change it up. However, there are so many different seasoning blends that you can add to tinned potatoes in the air fryer.
We used an Italian Seasoning, but Cajun seasoning, Fajita seasoning or even Chinese Five Spice will all work well. You could also keep it simple with some garlic powder and dried parsley.
There is no reason why you can't add some extra vegetables into the air fryer when cooking the potatoes. Onions are easy, but make sure to cut them into wedges, because they will cook quickly and you don't want them to burn.
You could also do Air Fryer Peppers at the same time too.
Serving suggestions
The great thing about air fryer tin potatoes is that they are SO versatile. Basically, whatever you would serve potatoes with, you can serve this with.
Some of our favourite mains to serve this with are Slow Cooker Chicken Thighs, Air Fryer Rotisserie Chicken, Herb Crusted Salmon, Air Fryer Cod or Slow Cooker Chicken Breast.
They aren't just a side thought! Air fryer canned potatoes are delicious sliced up and added to a frittata or put into a soup to make it nice and chunky. You could also use them to make potato salad.
Storage
Store: Any leftovers can be stored in an air tight container for up to 3 days.
Freeze: We wouldn't recommend freezing these are they will become quite mushy once defrosted.
Reheat: You can reheat them in the air fryer for 2 minutes.
Extra Tips
- Rinsing the potatoes is important, because it reduces some of the sodium content.
- If some of the potatoes in your can are large, then you can half or quarter them if needed. But try to make sure that they are an even size so they all cook at the same rate.
- The smaller you cut your potatoes, the quicker they will cook so you may need to adjust the cooking time.
- Once cooked, why not toss them in some melted garlic butter? SO good.

We make this every week and have never had that problem. Every air fryer cooks differently though, but this would only happen if it was cooked at too high a heat.
