This Air Fryer Canned Potatoes recipe is a quick and easy, as well as budget friendly side dish. We always have canned potatoes in the cupboard and cooking them in the air fryer gives them the best texture - crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. Perfect for those nights when you don't even have time to peel and chop potatoes.

About Air Fryer Tinned Potatoes

Tinned potatoes are a staple in our kitchen. They are a super versatile side dish and they are really cheap to buy, so they are a good way to bulk out your meal. Not to mention that potatoes are nutritious.

Canned potatoes in the air fryer take just 1 minute preparation and then just 12 minutes to cook and you end up with deliciously crispy potatoes. That have come from a can!

Honestly, I wish I had an air fryer in my student days because these tinned potatoes in the air fryer would have been made a LOT! There are a lot of canned potatoes recipes out there, but this is our favourite.

Ingredients and Substitutions

All the ingredients needed for this recipe each with a text overlay label.

A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

  • Canned potatoes - We bought the cheapest ones we could for this recipe, as we wanted to show just how budget friendly tin potatoes in air fryer are. But you could also use the more expensive canned baby potatoes.
  • Olive oil - This is what helps the air fryer tin potatoes get nice and crispy. Use a good quality olive oil.
  • Italian seasoning - Whilst you can keep this simple and just use potatoes and oil, some seasoning really does add some extra flavour and Italian seasoning is always our favourite. Carry on reading for more seasoning ideas.
  • Parmesan - So, this is totally an optional extra and definitely makes air fryer canned potatoes less budget friendly, but it's totally worth it. It makes them a little more special.

Variations

This is a super simple recipe, so there aren't too many ways that you can change it up. However, there are so many different seasoning blends that you can add to tinned potatoes in the air fryer.

We used an Italian Seasoning, but Cajun seasoning, Fajita seasoning or even Chinese Five Spice will all work well. You could also keep it simple with some garlic powder and dried parsley.

There is no reason why you can't add some extra vegetables into the air fryer when cooking the potatoes. Onions are easy, but make sure to cut them into wedges, because they will cook quickly and you don't want them to burn.

You could also do Air Fryer Peppers at the same time too.

How to Make Air Fryer Canned Potatoes - Step by Step

Prep: Drain and rinse the potatoes under cold water.

  1. Step 1: Put them into a bowl with the oil and seasoning. Toss well to fully coat all the potatoes.
Seasoned new potatoes in an air fryer basket.
  1. Step 2: Put the potatoes into your air fryer. Cook at 190°C for 12 minutes, shaking halfway.
Cooked new potatoes with grated Parmesan and chopped herbs.
  1. Step 3: Serve topped with grated Parmesan and chopped herbs (both optional).

Serving Suggestions

The great thing about air fryer tin potatoes is that they are SO versatile. Basically, whatever you would serve potatoes with, you can serve this with.

Some of our favourite mains to serve this with are Slow Cooker Chicken Thighs, Air Fryer Rotisserie Chicken, Herb Crusted Salmon, Air Fryer Cod or Slow Cooker Chicken Breast.

They aren't just a side thought! Air fryer canned potatoes are delicious sliced up and added to a frittata or put into a soup to make it nice and chunky. You could also use them to make potato salad.

Cooked chicken drumsticks on a plate with new potatoes and a creamy dip.

Storage

Store: Any leftovers can be stored in an air tight container for up to 3 days.

Freeze: We wouldn't recommend freezing these are they will become quite mushy once defrosted.

Reheat: You can reheat them in the air fryer for 2 minutes.

Extra Tips

  • Rinsing the potatoes is important, because it reduces some of the sodium content.
  • If some of the potatoes in your can are large, then you can half or quarter them if needed. But try to make sure that they are an even size so they all cook at the same rate.
  • The smaller you cut your potatoes, the quicker they will cook so you may need to adjust the cooking time.
  • Once cooked, why not toss them in some melted garlic butter? SO good.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pat the potatoes dry?

We find that removing as much moisture as possible means you get the crispiest air fryer tinned potatoes.

How long to canned potatoes in the air fryer

Every air fryer cooks differently, so whilst ours cooked these perfectly in 12 minutes, yours might only take 10 minutes or they might take 14. After 10 minutes, check frequently to avoid burning.

How can I make tinned potatoes in the air fryer extra crispy?

They are pretty crispy as they are, but if you wanted them extra crispy then shake them half way and add a little extra oil after shaking them. You can also put them back in the air fryer for 1 minute after adding the Parmesan.

What air fryer do you recommend?

We really can't rate the Ninja Foodi Max Dual highly enough. It has a huge 9.5 litre capacity, that allows you to cook two different things at once and it has 6 different cooking functions. It is 65% more efficient than an oven and uses 75% less fat than traditional cooking. And, it is also dishwasher safe.

We make this every week and have never had that problem. Every air fryer cooks differently though, but this would only happen if it was cooked at too high a heat.
