Ingredients and Substitutions
A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Bell peppers - You can use any colour bell pepper you like, but the red, orange and yellow are the sweetest because they have ripened for longer. Red and yellow bell peppers are just green peppers that have been left to ripen longer, which is why green peppers are always cheaper. Try to use a mixture of colours.
- Oil - Use a good quality olive oil. This helps the bell peppers in air fryer to get some crispy bits and also stop them from sticking to the basket.
- Salt and pepper - Generously seaon.
Variations
Seasoning - Pretty much anything goes when it comes to adding seasoning to peppers in air fryer. You could add some garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, Mexican seasoning, Italian seasoning or even drizzle some balsamic vinegar or soy sauce on.
Peppers - You can use any peppers for this air fryer peppers recipe. Add to the bell peppers some jalapenos, shishito, Padron or poblano for a mixture of textures.
Onions - You can easily add onion into this as well and cook it at the same time. I would suggest cutting the onion into wedges or larger strips, as if they are too thin then they will cook too quickly and burn.
Meat - If you want to make this more of a whole meal, then you can add some sliced of sausages with the peppers. Something like Kielbasa will work well.
How to Make Air Fryer Peppers - Step by Step
- Step 1: Cut the peppers open and remove the stem and seeds. Slice into strips.
- Step 2: Put the strips into a mixing bowl with the oil, salt and pepper. Mix well to coat the peppers.
- Step 3: Cook at 200°C for 12 minutes, shaking half way through cooking.
Serving Suggestions
The great thing about air fryer peppers is that there is SO many things you can do with them. I would happily eat them all straight from the air fryer basket, but it's worth saving some to add to your meals. Here are some of our favourite ways to use them:
- Burrito Bowls
- Tacos
- Buddha bowls
- Curries
- Sandwiches
- Salads
- Homemade pizza
Storage
Store: Leftovers will store in an air tight container or zip-lock bag in the fridge for up top 5 days.
Freeze: These freeze really well and are great for weekly meal prep, as you can just add them to your curries and stews from frozen. Flash freeze on a baking tray and then transfer to a freezer bag and keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Defrost: You can cook them from frozen in a sauce, or you can defrost at room temperature in a couple of hours.
Reheat: You can reheat them in the air fryer.
Extra Tips
- When preparing the bell peppers, use a sharp knife to de-seed and remove the membrane part.
- Your air fryer might need pre-heating before using, so make sure you check your manual as every air fryer is different.
- Make sure you shake the basket halfway through cooking.
- Don't overload your air fryer basket, as you want enough air to circulate so they get nice and crispy and don't just steam and get soggy.
