Ingredients and Substitutions
A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Chicken - This is where the protein comes from in the meal and makes it nice and filling. We used our Air Fryer Greek Chicken, which is crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside and has the best flavour.
- Tzatziki - The ultimate Greek dip/sauce. You can't beat Homemade Tzatziki and it's so easy to make too.
- Cucumber - Either add it sliced or cut into cubes.
- Tomatoes - This adds lots of colour and juiciness. You could chop up some sun-dried tomatoes to add in too.
- Olives - A must on any Greek dish, and I won't hear otherwise! Any of your favourite olives will work, or why not try our Marinated Olives?
- Rice - We used a microwave pouch of wholegrain rice with quinoa mixed in. It only takes 2 minutes to cook and we find these really handy to have in the cupboard for quick meals. Why not try making our Greek Rice instead?
- Onions - We used our Quick Pickled Red Onions, as they are so quick and easy to make, and add a lot of flavour.
- Feta - It's not a Greek dish without feta, right? Try to get authentic feta cheese, rather than supermarket own "Greek salad cheese". But that is fine if that's all you can get.
- Lettuce - This is an easy way to bulk out the Greek Chicken Salad Bowls, without adding a lot of extra calories. We used little gem lettuce.
Variations
What we love about salad bowls like this is that they are so easy to adapt and this tzatziki bowl is no different. A few things are a staple, like the Greek chicken, but there are lots of other ways to change it up.
Grain - You could swap rice for farro, couscous or bulgar wheat. You could also make our Greek Potatoes and add those instead. If you wanted these Greek chicken bowls to be lower in carbs, then why not make cauliflower rice?
Cheese - We used feta, which adds a lovely creamy texture to the Greek bowls. But you could cook some halloumi instead and that adds a lovely meaty texture, whilst still having that salty flavour.
Vegetables - Pretty much any vegetables go when it comes to this Greek bowl recipe. You could add some Air Fryer Roasted Vegetables or Roasted Peppers. Some marinated artichokes are a nice addition too, as is avocado for some extra creaminess.
Vegetarian - If you wanted to make a vegetarian version of this, then swap then chicken for Roasted Chickpeas. If you are still having chicken, add the chickpeas as well for a protein boost.
Fish - Fancy something a bit different? Add some Greek seasoning to prawns (shrimp) or salmon and cook and add that instead of chicken.
How to Make Greek Bowls
Cook the chicken and rice if you aren't using leftovers, then simply assemble the bowl by adding all of the ingredients.
Serving Suggestions
This Greek chicken with tzatziki bowl is pretty much a meal in itself, so we don't usually serve it with anything. However, if you wanted to make it more filling, then we recommend making our Easy Homemade Flatbreads and some Hummus to dip them in.
Some pita bread is a good addition too, as is a side of fries. You often get fries with chicken in a pita in Greece - it's the best street food. Why not try our Air Fryer Fries or Oven Baked Fries?
Storage
Store: These Greek bowls are perfect for meal prep. Get yourself some good Glass Meal Prep Containers and portion these bowls out into them. You can store them in the fridge for up to 4 days. Check out my Picky Plates post for more meal prep inspiration.
Freeze: We wouldn't recommend freezing these Greek chicken bowls, because there is a lot of water based ingredients that doesn't thaw well. You can freeze the chicken though, to make it quicker and easier to assemble these bowls.
Extra Tips
- Why not finish off the Greek Chicken Bowls with lots of fresh dill sprinkled on top.
- If you are making these for meal prep, then I would recommend not adding the tzatziki until just before serving, as it can make everything else a bit soggy.
- Not an olive fan? You can swap them for capers, and you will still get that salty flavour.
- If you want to make this much simpler, then why not just use leftovers from a roast chicken?
