  • Sweet potatoes - We used medium sized orange sweet potatoes.
  • Oil - Use a good quality extra virgin olive oil. Avocado oil also works well.
  • Salt and black pepper - Generously season.

Air Fryer Baked Sweet Potato Variations

Sweet and Spicy

  • Ingredients: 1 tablespoon brown sugar, ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Instructions: After rubbing the sweet potatoes with olive oil, sprinkle them with the brown sugar, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper mixture before air frying.

Garlic and Herb

  • Ingredients: 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon dried thyme, 1 teaspoon dried rosemary.
  • Instructions: Mix the garlic powder, thyme, and rosemary with the olive oil before coating the sweet potatoes.

Cheesy

  • Ingredients: Grated Parmesan cheese and garlic powder.
  • Instructions: After air frying, sprinkle the sweet potatoes with grated Parmesan cheese and a dash of garlic powder before serving.

How To Cook Sweet Potatoes in an Air Fryer - Step by Step

Prep: Preheat your air fryer to 190°C. Scrub and pat dry the sweet potatoes. Prick all over with a fork.

  1. Step 1: Rub the oil all over the potatoes and season with the salt and pepper.

  1. Step 2: Put into the preheated air fryer and cook for 30 minutes.
Cooked sweet potatoes, cut open with pats of butter melting in them.
  1. Step 3: Let the potatoes cool for a few minutes so they can be handled. Slice open and fluff up the insides with a fork. Add your toppings as desired.

How Long Does It Take To Cook Air Fryer Baked Sweet Potatoes?

It depends on the size of your sweet potatoes, and they type of air fryer you are using. However, for medium sized sweet potatoes, at 190°C it takes around 30 minutes for the them to be cooked.

However, every air fryer cooks differently, so pierce it with a knife to check it it cooked before serving. It may need 5 minutes more. Larger potatoes will take more like 45-50 minutes.

The BEST Sweet Potato Toppings

Classic Butter and Cinnamon - Top the sliced open sweet potatoes with a pat of butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Greek Yogurt and Chives - Add a dollop of Greek yogurt (instead of sour cream) and a sprinkle of chopped chives for a tangy and fresh flavour.

Avocado and Salsa - Top with fresh avocado slices and a spoonful of salsa for a zesty twist.

Maple Pecan - Drizzle the sweet potatoes with maple syrup and sprinkle with chopped pecans for a sweet and crunchy topping.

Tuna - We love a tuna crunch mix. Tuna, Greek yogurt (instead of mayo) and some celery.

Cheese and Beans - It's a British classic, but Homemade Baked Beans and some grated cheddar is such a simple, but classic combination.

Serving Suggestions

You can serve them as the main dish with some toppings loaded on like above. Or, serve these air fryer baked sweet potatoes as a side dish with grilled chicken or steak. You can pair them with a fresh salad like our Little Gem Salad.

You can use these as a base for a sweet potato bowl, adding toppings like black beans, corn, avocado, and a drizzle of lime crema for a Mexican twist.

Tips To Make The BEST Air Fryer Baked Sweet Potatoes

  • Choose sweet potatoes that are similar in size for even cooking.
  • To check if the air fryer sweet potatoes are done, insert a fork or skewer into the centre. It should slide in easily.
  • Remove the potatoes from the air fryer and let them cool for a few minutes. Slice them open and fluff the insides with a fork before serving.
  • If you're in a hurry, you can start the sweet potatoes in the microwave. Pierce and microwave on high for 5-6 minutes before transferring to the air fryer to finish cooking and crisp up the skin.
  • If you have a small air fryer, you might need to cook the sweet potatoes in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  • To ensure even cooking, flip the sweet potatoes halfway through the cooking time. Use tongs to handle them safely.
  • For an even crispier skin, after the initial cooking time, brush the sweet potatoes with a bit more olive oil and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Don't forget to pierce holes in the sweet potatoes, otherwise they will burst in the air fryer.

How to store leftovers

Store leftover sweet potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes.

Can you use aluminium foil in the air fryer?

Yes, you can wrap the sweet potatoes in aluminium foil, but this might result in softer skin. If you prefer a crispy skin, it's best to cook them directly in the air fryer basket.

Can you freeze cooked baked sweet potatoes?

Yes, place the cooked and cooled potatoes in a ziplock bag and you can store them in the freezer for up to 3 months. You can thaw them in the fridge overnight and then reheat them in the air fryer. We love doing this for meal prep.

  • 2 pinch Sea salt
  • 2 pinch Ground black pepper
