Ingredients and Substitutions
A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Cottage cheese - I use fat free, to make it as light as possible. But you can use any percentage fat you like. The higher the fat, the more of a creamy texture the dip will be. But, higher fat cottage cheese is thicker, so you may need to add a splash of milk to loosen it. Every brand of cottage cheese is different, and some are runnier than others, so that's something to keep in mind.
- Taco seasoning - You can use store bought, or follow our recipe for Fajita Seasoning which is basically the same.
- Greek yogurt - To make it extra creamy, smoother and for some added protein, we added some Greek yogurt. We used 0% fat, but you can use any.
- Toppings - Anything goes here. We used jalapeños, tomatoes, green onions, olives and of course some shredded cheddar cheese.
Variations
Really, anything that would get loaded into a taco would work here.
Indulgent: You can add dollops of cream cheese or sour cream and some of our best guacamole on top for extra flavour and creaminess. This is especially nice if you like a richer dip.
Veggies: Add black beans or corn to the toppings for extra protein and fibre. These additions also add colour and texture.
Extra Spicy: Add finely chopped jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the cottage cheese mixture
How To Make Cottage Cheese Taco Dip - Step by Step
- Step 1: Put the cottage cheese, yogurt, half of the jalapeños and taco seasoning into a blender or food processor.
- Step 2: Blend until smooth. You may need to use a spatula to push the dip down the blender a few times.
- Step 3: Transfer the dip to a large bowl.
- Step 4: Top with the remaining ingredients.
What to Serve With Cottage Cheese Taco Dip
As a Dip: Serve with homemade baked tortilla chips or air fryer tortilla chips. It's also really good with pita chips, or fresh veggie sticks like celery, cucumber, and bell peppers. This is a classic way to enjoy the dip and perfect for parties.
As a Topping: Use it as a topping for baked potatoes (have you tried our Slow Cooker Baked Potatoes or Air Fryer Baked Potatoes?), grilled chicken, or even as a filling for wraps and sandwiches. It adds a creamy, flavourful layer to many dishes.
As a Side: Pair it with a Mexican-inspired meal like tacos, burritos, or enchiladas. It complements these dishes well and adds a fresh, creamy component. Why not try our Air Fryer Fish Tacos or Bean Burritos?
Extra Tips
- You don't have to blend this cottage cheese taco dip, but we find the smoother texture is much better. It gives it a sour cream consistency and if you don't like the lumps in cottage cheese usually, then blending it helps.
- A shallow dish works best for this cottage cheese taco dip, as it makes it easier for dipping and scooping up all those toppings.
- Fat free cottage cheese will produce some extra liquid when it is blended, so you will get a slightly runnier dip. If you don't want that, then use a higher fat dip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Serve immediately with tortilla chips, or put into an airtight container and put in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before serving to allow the flavours to meld. If refrigerated, allow it to sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes before serving for the best taste and texture.
Prepare the base layer and toppings separately and assemble just before serving to keep everything fresh and crisp. This is especially useful if you’re making it for a party.
Freezing is not recommended as the texture of cottage cheese can change when thawed, resulting in a less desirable consistency. The fresh vegetables might also become watery upon thawing.
Yes, you can use a hand blender instead of a food processor, but it probably won't get everything quite smooth enough.
