Ingredients and Substitutions
A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Flour - You need all-purpose flour (plain flour) for these homemade crackers, as you don't want them to rise. They are meant to be thin and crisp.
- Salt - Use fine sea salt.
- Water - Cold water is fine.
- Oil - Use a good quality extra virgin olive oil for this cracker recipe.
- Seasoning - We used our homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning, but there are so many different seasoning options, and there is more on that below.
More ingredient substitutions and variations can be found in the recipe card.
Homemade Crackers Seasoning
The great thing about these baked crackers is that there are so many different ways that you can season them. You could not put anything on top of them at all and keep it simple, but we made crackers with Everything Bagel Seasoning as we would put that stuff on everything!
We have tested this recipe many, many times to get the cooking time perfect. But, to also test out all the different ways to season them and share our favorites with you:
- Herbs - We love rosemary crackers, so we chopped up some fresh rosemary (about a teaspoon) and mixed it into the dough. Other woody herbs like thyme work well too.
- Cheese - Who doesn't love cheesy crackers! You can sprinkle some finely grated Parmesan on top of the rolled out dough before it goes into the oven.
- Spice - If you want your homemade crackers with a kick of heat, then you can add some smoked paprika to the dough and then sprinkle some red chili flakes on top before they go in the oven.
- Garlic - Add some garlic granules to the dough for a garlicky twist on these.
- Seeds - You can also just sprinkle some seeds like poppy, sesame seeds or chia on top.
How To Make Crackers - Step by Step
Prep: Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C(fan)/425°F/Gas 7. Line 2 baking trays with parchment paper (baking paper).
- Step 1: In a large bowl, add the flour and salt and then make a well in the middle.
- Step 2: Pour the water and the oil into the well.
- Step 3: Mix it together to form a dough. Use your hands to make sure it is well mixed and form into a ball. Divide the ball in two.
- Step 4: Put one of the sheets of baking paper on your kitchen surface and dust with flour and dust a rolling pin with flour too. Roll the cracker dough out to 1-2mm thick. You can cut round the edges if you want it to be neat, but leaving it means there is no waste.
Brush the rolled out dough with a little water and then use a fork to prick it (this is called docking).
- Step 5: Add the seasoning and then take the rolling pin and gently roll over it so all the seasoning sticks.
Use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to mark the lines of the crackers, but don't go all the way through.
- Step 6: Carefully lift the baking paper on to the baking sheet and put it in the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes until crispy (but make sure they aren't going brown too quickly).
- Step 7: Repeat with the second dough ball. Leave to cool and then snap them into individual crackers.
Serving Suggestions
These homemade crackers can be used SO many different ways. We kept it simple and served them with our Homemade Butterbean Hummus. But, other dips that work well are Whipped Feta, Greek Yogurt Ranch Dip or Creamy Cottage Cheese Dip.
They are also a delicious addition to a serving board like our Greek Meze Platter, Tapas Platter or Grazing Platter.
You could also just serve them with some cheese slices for an easy snack.
Extra Tips
- Every oven cooks differently, so whilst the cooking time says 10-15 minutes, it could be closer to 9-10 minutes for your oven, or they might take a few minutes longer than 15. Keep an eye on them.
- How thick or thin you roll the dough also will change how long they will take in the oven.
- If your crackers are still pale white, then they are not crispy.
- As they cool, they will get crispier.
- You can also change the shape of the crackers by using cookie cutters. These would be good for kid's lunch boxes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Keep these in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 weeks. They will still be edible after that, but not their freshest.
This is fine if you do. But we like snapping them when they are freshly baked and they tend to shrink more when cut.
Yes, you can. However, you will need to add a little extra water, as it is more absorbent.
