Just a few ingredients - yogurt, cacao (or cocoa), some vanilla and a liquid sweetener and you can make the creamiest chocolate frozen yogurt that is low in calories and high in protein. A great dessert if you are eating in a calorie deficit and want something sweet.
We always have some of this Creami frozen yogurt stashed in our freezer, and our kids love it too and it's a healthier alternative that we can feel good about giving them. There is no heavy cream in this recipe - just Greek yogurt which still makes it smooth and creamy.

Ingredients and Substitutions
A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Greek yogurt - We used a 0% fat Greek yogurt to make it lower in fat. However, you could use full fat which would make it extra creamy. Greek yogurt is used instead of cream in this Ninja Creami frozen yogurt recipe, but it has the same texture as ice cream. So good!
- Sweetener - Any liquid sweetener will work here. We used maple syrup, but you could use honey or agave.
- Vanilla - Use extract rather than essence which tastes artificial.
- Cacao - This is where the chocolate flavor comes from. You can use an unsweetened cocoa powder instead if you prefer.
- Milk - We used skim milk to keep it lighter. But you can use full fat if you prefer.
Variations and Mix-ins
Protein - If you wanted to give this a protein boost, then you could swap the cacao for a chocolate protein powder instead.
Sweetness - If you want it even sweeter, then you can add some extra liquid sweetener. We think it is sweet enough as it is though.
Mix-ins - When it comes to mixing things into the chocolate frozen yogurt, you can't go wrong with chocolate chips. We stick with Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Chips. You could mix in some crushed nuts too.
How To Make Ninja CREAMi Chocolate Frozen Yogurt
- Step 1: Put all of the ingredients into the Ninja Creami pint container.
- Step 2: Give it a really good mix to combine it all evenly.
- Step 3: Put the lid on the container and freeze for 24 hours.
- Step 4: Remove the lid and put the frozen tub into the outer bowl and put on the outer bowl lid. Put into the Creami machine and set to the frozen Yogurt setting and spin. This may result in a crumbly texture.
- Step 5: Replace the tub in the machine and press Respin. This may take 1-2 more re-spins to achieve the perfect creamy consistancy.
Serving Suggestions
Much like regular chocolate ice cream - what can't go on it!? Think about when you go into an ice cream shop, and all the different toppings that you can choose from. The same goes for this!
We kept it simple with just some dark chocolate chips. But, why not try our Homemade Chocolate Sauce too? You could also make some of our Homemade Healthy Nutella and drizzle that over it to make it extra chocolatey. Some granola on top adds a nice crunch too.
Our kids love adding sprinkles on to it and marshmallows too. Whilst we have just scooped this chocolate frozen yogurt recipe into a bowl, you can put it in a waffle cone to make it feel more like a treat.
Dannii's Top Tips
- We used fat free Greek yogurt, to keep this a low in fat dessert. However, if you wanted it extra creamy, then full fat yogurt would be best.
- Some recipes might say that if you are using fat free, then you need to add some heavy cream to it to increase the fat content and make it creamier. However, we didn't find that it made that much of a difference to the creaminess, so I wouldn't bother.
- Another great mix-in is crushed Oreos, as it gives it a cookies and cream flavor.
- To combine everything together easier, you can use a milk frother or use a blender to blend everything first.
- When putting the ingredients into the pint container, don't exceed the max fill line.
Frequently Asked Questions
The ice cream will harden again when it goes into the freezer, so we would recommend keeping it in the Ninja container, so it can be re-spun again when you are ready to eat the leftovers. You can also just leave the pint out of the freezer for 10 minutes until it softens and then scoop it.
When making a healthy ice cream with just yogurt rather than cream, sometimes you have to re-spin it more times. If after all the re-spins it's still crumbly, then add a tablespoon of milk and re-spin again and it should be a creamy texture.

Ninja CREAMi Chocolate Frozen Yogurt
Ingredients
- 260 g (1.25 cups) of 0% Fat Free Greek yogurt
- 4 tablespoons of Maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon of Vanilla extract

- 250 ml (1 cups) of Skim milk

So happy to find some recipe inspiration that doesn’t have pudding mix or protein powder or a load of sugar and fat!
I have made a variation of your recipe - I realise that I must have a bigger model - I never worry to much about weighing stuff, Im an eyeball cook! Anyway… I had some whole almonds that needed to be used up (about 1/2 cup). So I popped those, 3 dates, a bit of cinnamon honey, some vanilla and almond extract, 4 tablespoons of pure unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 3/4 cups of curd (set yoghurt). I didn’t understand why there was so much milk in your recipe (is there a reason why you don’t use all yoghurt??) - I have added some but I didn’t have much at home so I hope it will be ok - I had just enough to bring everything up to the max fill line. I blitzed it all in the blended and have popped it in the freezer - it tasted great as a milkshake - let’s see how it turns out tomorrow!! Thank you once again!
