Not only is a smoothie a great way to boost your fruit intake, but it can be a filling meal as well when you add some yogurt and oats to bulk it out. This Triple Berry Smoothie with oats will definitely add some colour to your morning and keep you going until your next meal or snack.
Our go-to fruit when it comes to a smoothie is berries. We always have plenty of them in our fridge and freezer due to berry obsessed kids. They have plenty of flavour, they are lower in sugar than other fruits and just look at the colour that it gives to an oat smoothie!
We are big advocates of eating whole fruit, but when you need something in a rush, drinking a smoothie just seems so much easier and has been a bit of a life saver since having kids. A berry smoothie can and should be filling, you just have to bulk them out a bit.

Ingredients and Substitutions
A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Triple berry mix - We made this berry smoothie easier by using a frozen berry mix. It has raspberries, blueberries and blackberries in it.
- Banana - This helps to thicken the berry smoothie and also add sweetness. If you really don't like the flavour of banana, then you could use half an avocado instead and then add a bit more honey. Use frozen banana to make a really thick smoothie.
- Oats - This is what makes the smoothie nice and thick and filling. We used rolled oats.
- Yogurt - An easy way to add a protein boost. We used Greek yogurt, but any will work.
- Honey - We added a bit of extra sweetness to our berry smoothie recipe with some honey. Any liquid sweetener will work, like maple syrup.
- Milk - You can use any milk you like. Coconut milk adds a nice thickness to this.
Berry Smoothie Variations
Fresh or frozen - We try to eat seasonally as much as possible in our house, but we aren't totally strict about that, although it's something we will try to be better with this year.
We try to keep our fresh berry eating to just the summer months when they are at their best, but that doesn't mean that we have to miss out, because you can buy some great bags of frozen berries in the supermarket now. You can use fresh berries in this berry smoothie instead.
Extra protein - You can add some chia seeds or even a scoop of your favourite protein powder to this oat smoothie for a protein boost. Why not try blending in some cottage cheese as well?
Chocolate - If you want to make a chocolate version of this berry smoothie, then you can blend some cocoa or cacao powder into it, or even some chocolate protein powder.
Greens - Add some spinach or kale to this berry smoothie for a green veggie boost.
How To Make A Berry Smoothie - Step By Step
- Step 1: Put the frozen berries and banana into a blender.
- Step 2: Add the oats, milk, yogurt and honey.
- Step 3: Blend until smooth.
This is definitely a filling smoothie and is filling enough to have as a light breakfast or snack. The reason why it is so filling is because we added some rolled oats and Greek yogurt to it.
You can make it more filling by adding a banana or some avocado to it. The oats make it nice and creamy too. Oat smoothies are the way to go.
Top Tip
Smoothies not your thing? You could also use less milk and a few more oats and it turns into a thick dessert. Sprinkle with some chocolate chips and you have yourself a dessert. Why not check out our Smoothie Bowl Recipe?
Extra Tips
- If you want a thicker smoothie, add a banana or some avocado.
- We used frozen fruit (which does help to thicken it) and makes it nice and cold. But you could just use fresh fruit instead.
- To make this smoothie vegan, leave out the honey or swap it for maple syrup or another liquid sweetener.
- Add some spinach for a green boost (this will change the colour of it though).
- Make this smoothie even creamier by adding a splash of coconut milk or a spoonful of nut butter.
- Want a new dessert idea? You could also use less milk and a few more oats and it turns into a thick dessert. Sprinkle with some chocolate chips and you have yourself a dessert.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can store any leftover smoothie in the fridge for 1-2 days. The ingredients may separate, but this is normal. Just give it a quick stir before drinking.
To make this vegan, use a plant based yoghurt, swap the honey for maple syrup and use a plant based milk.
For a quick and easy morning smoothie, prepare the ingredients the night before. Measure out the berries, oats, and chia seeds, and store them in a container in the fridge. In the morning, just add them to the blender with the milk and banana.

I don't know how you do it with a baby. I barely had time to pee when I have a newborn haha. I am making more of an effort now though, because I have a wedding dress to fit in to.

Mmm, this smoothie sounds so good right now! Like you, I try to stick to fruits and berries that are in-season, but I have to have a bag of frozen berries in the freezer. They make a mean smoothie, and it helps me get through the winter blues. I've never tried adding oats to my smoothies, but I'll have to try that next time -- I bet it would add some great thickness and make it way more filling!
