Gyoza is always our go-to for a quick and easy meal or snack. Although they are usually steamed, we have cooked them in the air fryer, not only because it's easy, but they get deliciously crispy. Cooked from frozen, this is the only way we cook gyoza now.

    Ingredients needed

    • Gyoza - We used a mixture of chicken and vegetable gyoza from Itsu that we keep in the freezer. You can make your own though, and we have given a recommendation for that below.
    • Spray oil - Make sure you spray them with oil, otherwise they will be too dry once cooked.

A full ingredients list with measurements is in the recipe card below.

All the ingredients needed for this recipe with text overlay labels.

How to make air fryer gyoza - Step by step

One: Put the gyoza into the air fryer in a single layer. Spray with oil. Set air fryer to 190°C and cook for 6 minutes.

An air fryer basket containing frozen gyoza.

Two: Turn each gyoza and cook for a further 2-6 minutes, until cooked to your liking.

Three: Serve with a dipping sauce.

Cooked gyoza on a plate with a bowl of sauce.

    Why should you try it?

    • Quick and easy - These are ready in under 10 minutes.
    • Versatile - Use your favourite gyoza, whether homemade or frozen, there is so much choice out there.
    • Cook from frozen - Stash loads in the freezer and then chuck them in the air fryer for an easy meal from frozen.
    • Healthier than deep frying - All the crispiness of deep frying, but much healthier.

    Why use an air fryer?

    • Air fryers are a healthier way to cook food. You can get crispy food, like chips (fries), bacon and sausages with much less oil than frying or baking.
    • They are quick and easy to turn on and they heat up quickly, so you don't have to wait for an oven to heat up.
    • There is nothing worse than using your oven on a hot day, and heating up the whole kitchen. Using the air fryer stops this from happening.
    • They might take up a fair amount of space on your countertop, but they are so versatile that you will use them over and over again. They are very easy to clean too.
    • Using an air fryer means more space in the oven.

    What is gyoza?

Gyoza are a Japanese dumpling that is made of a gyoza wrapper stuffed with various fillings like vegetables or meat. This is the perfect quick and easy cheats meal, because we have used frozen gyoza. We use Itsu Gyoza, and they do an amazing vegetables fusions one, as well as chicken, pork, prawn or duck.

If you wanted to make these yourself, then of course you can. We recommend this Gyoza Recipe. You won't need to cook them for as long, because they are fresh rather than frozen, so just air fryer them for 3 minutes each side.

    Cooked gyoza with crispy edges.

What to serve with Air Fryer Gyoza

This is a really simple meal or snack, so there aren't loads of options here. We served it with our Easy Gyoza Sauce, which is mixture of soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar and optional chilli flakes for a kick of heat.

If you wanted to make this in to more of a meal, then why not serve these on top of a noodle soup? Total comfort food.

    Storage

Store: If you have any leftover, you can store them in an air tight container in the fridge and then you can either eat them cold or you can reheat them in an air fryer for 3 minutes.

Freeze: We don't recommend re-freezing them after they have been cooked.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does gyoza take in the air fryer?

These took 9 minutes in our air fryer, but it will depend on your air fryer as they all cook them differently. Make sure you check them a few minutes after turning.

What is the best air fryer to use?

We can't rate highly enough the Power Air Fryer XL. The 5 litre capacity is big enough for cooking for the whole family and it can fry, grill, bake, sauté, roast and steam. There are simple touch screen controls and it heats up quickly and can cook your food up to 70% faster than a conventional oven. Also, it's dishwasher safe.

Do I need to preheat the air fryer first?

No, there is no need to preheat the air fryer for this recipe.

Do I need to turn the gyoza?

Yes, you need to turn them halfway through to make sure that they are evenly cooked.

    Extra tips

    • The nutritional information is based on 12 chicken gyoza. This will differ depending on the gyoza you use.
    • If you make the gyoza yourself or have left the frozen ones to thaw, then you will need to reduce the cooking time by a couple of minutes.
    • Don't overload your air fryer. Make sure that the gyoza have some space between them and nothing is stacked on top of each other.
    • This recipe is based on the air fryer we have used and mentioned above. Using a different air fryer may mean that cooking times vary.
    • Empty out any grease from your air fryer before cooking another batch.
    • Don't forget to spray them with oil, otherwise they will be too dry and crispy. You want them to still have a bit of chewiness to them.
