Why You Will Love It

  • Perfectly cooked steak every time - This a foolproof recipe to get charred, juicy and tender steak every time. It's one of the many reasons why we love the air fryer!
  • Lower in calories than frying - Usually, you would need to fry steak to get it cooked like this. But, the air fryer does it too, but with much less oil.
  • Different seasoning options - We have used Italian seasoning to season the steak, but you can use your favourite seasoning blend.
  • Versatile - There are so many things you can serve this with, it's such a versatile side dish.

Ingredients and Substitutions

All the ingredients needed for this recipe with text overlay labels.

A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

  • Steak - You can use any cuts of steak that you like, depending on your budget. However, the better quality the better it will taste. We use a lean flank steak, as it cooks quicker. If you want something a little more special, then Ribeye and New York Strip are the best cuts for air frying, but tri-tip and top round also work well. You want to use a steak that is about 1 inch thick.
  • Oil - We used olive oil. Don't use extra virgin olive oil though.
  • Italian seasoning - We love the mix of garlic, oregano and dried pepper in Italian seasoning, but you can use your favourite seasoning blend.
  • Salt and pepper - A generous amount of salt and pepper is needed.

More ingredient substitutions and variations can be found in the recipe card.

Why Use An Air Fryer?

  • Air fryers are a healthier way to cook food. You can get crispy food, like chips (fries), bacon and sausages with much less oil than frying or baking.
  • They are quick and easy to turn on and they heat up quickly, so you don't have to wait for an oven to heat up.
  • There is nothing worse than using your oven on a hot day, and heating up the whole kitchen. Using the air fryer stops this from happening.
  • They might take up a fair amount of space on your countertop, but they are so versatile that you will use them over and over again. They are very easy to clean too.
  • Using an air fryer means more space in the oven.

Air Fryer Steak Cooking Time

This really is a personally preference, depending on how you like your steak cooked. However, we think medium rare is perfect for this this steak. Use a meat thermometer to test the temperature.

Here are the internal temperatures and approximate times to cook your air fryer steak, depending on how you like it:

  • 52°C/125°F for rare (6-7 minutes)
  • 57°C/135°F for medium rare (7-9 minutes)
  • 63°C/145°F for medium (10-13 minutes)
  • 66°C/150°F for medium well (13-14 minutes)
  • 69°C/155°F for well done (14-15 minutes)

We have served this with our Air Fryer Potato Wedges, however it also goes well with our Cheesy Potato Bake which is one of our favourites for total comfort food. You can also use it to make our Steak and Rice Bowl, Steak Tacos or Steak Salad.

Defrost: You can defrost cooked steak in the fridge overnight.

Reheat: You can reheat it in a frying pan with a little oil.

  • Make sure that you season the steak, as it really will make a difference to the finished flavour.
  • Make sure you don't overload your air fryer. Don't stack or overlap the steaks and don't exceed the maximum capacity of your air fryer. You can always cook them in batches. We cooked one steak at a time.
  • Make sure you allow the steaks to rest for at least 5 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best air fryer to use?

We can't rate highly enough the Power Air Fryer XL. The 5 litre capacity is big enough for cooking for the whole family and it can fry, grill, bake, sauté, roast and steam. There are simple touch screen controls and it heats up quickly and can cook your food up to 70% faster than a conventional oven. Also, it's dishwasher safe.

Do I need to preheat the air fryer first?

No, there is no need to preheat the air fryer for this recipe. If you want super crispy steak, then you could preheat it for 5 minutes first.

Does steak brown in the air fryer?

Yes, which is what we love about it. The hot, circulating air browns the outside of the steak, giving golden brown edges that is similar to a hard sear in a frying pan

Can you cook frozen steaks in the air fryer?

Yes, you can. It will take about 20 minutes, flipping half way through.

Are air fryer steaks gluten free?

Yes, as long as you make sure your seasoning is gluten free and there is no cross contamination, then this is gluten free.

Do you need to marinate the steaks first?

If you are short on time, then you don't have to. However, if you do have an hour extra, then it is worth it. It's important to do this if you are using a lean steak, because it will prevent it from drying out at a high heat.

Can you prepare air fryer steaks in advance?

Yes, you can marinate them and then keep them in the fridge until you are ready to cook. Bring them to room temperature before cooking for best results.

Do you need to turn steaks in the air fryer?

Yes, if you want an even sear on both sides, then flip the steak half way through the cooking time.

Why isn't my steak cooked?

Well, they shouldn't be raw after this cooking time, however if they still aren't cooked to your liking then cook them for a few more minutes. Cooking times will vary depending on the steak you use, the thickness of it and your air fryer.

Why do you put butter on steak?

This is a popular way of serving steak. It is done not only because it creates a nice sauce when melted, but it helps to soften the charred exterior and makes the steak more tender. You cab rub the steak with melted butter instead of oil if you prefer.

How long should you leave steak to rest?

A steak only needs 5 minutes of rest time. The reason it needs to rest is because the juices need time to redistribute. Otherwise they will just leak out when sliced.

This was perfectly cooked. Thanks for including the times for different doneness, as my husband and I both like our steak cooked differently. I did them both in the ninja dual at different times on the sync setting. Delicious!

I am still cooking this now, 20 mins later. I font know if you folks use minute steaks but the fat hasn't rendered but the meat is well over done.

As the recipe states, we used rip eye and that is what is photographed too. It will depend on how fatty your pieces of steak is. The meat will be overdone if cooking for 20 minutes. In the body of the post we have a whole section with all the cooking times.
