Perfectly cooked steaks, all done in the air fryer. This is our favourite way to cook steak! Seared on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside, this Air Fryer Steak recipe is so easy and full of flavour. Hands off cooking and ready in just 10 minutes.

Strips of medium rare steak on a wooden serving board.

Steak in the air fryer is one of the most underrated ways of cooking it. It creates juicy, tender steaks with a nice sear and it's so convenient to make. Minimal cleaning up, and perfectly cooked steaks every time. Never fry steak again with this foolproof recipe that the whole family will love.

    Ingredients needed

All the ingredients needed for this recipe with text overlay labels.
    • Steak - You can use any steak that you like, depending on your budget. However, the better quality the better it will taste. We use a lean flank steak, as it cooks quicker. If you want something a little more special, then Ribeye and New York Strip are the best cuts for air frying, but tri-tip and top round also work well. You want to use a steak that is about 1 inch thick.
    • Oil - We used olive oil. Don't use extra virgin olive oil though.
    • Italian seasoning - We love the mix of garlic, oregano and dried pepper in Italian seasoning, but you can use your favourite seasoning blend.
    • Salt and pepper - A generous amount of salt and pepper is needed.

A full ingredients list with measurements is in the recipe card below.

How to make air fryer steak - Step by step

One: Drizzle half the oil over the steaks. Season with salt and pepper and sprinkle over half the Italian seasoning. Rub the oil and seasoning into the steak. Flip the steaks over and repeat on the other side.

Two shot collage of two steaks on a plate first covered in oil, then with seasoning.

Two: Place the steaks into the air fryer (you may have to do one at a time).

An air fryer basket with a seasoned ribeye steak in it.

Three: Set the temperature to 200°C/400°F and cook for 7-9 minutes for medium rare, 10-13 minutes for medium or 14-15 minutes for well-done. Make sure to flip the steak over at the half way point.

An air fryer basket with a cooked steak in it.

Four: Transfer the steak to a chopping board and loosely cover with foil. Let the steak rest for 5-10 minutes before cutting into it.

    Why should you try it?

    • Perfectly cooked steak every time - This a foolproof recipe to get charred, juicy and tender steak every time. It's one of the many reasons why we love the air fryer!
    • Lower in calories than frying - Usually, you would need to fry steak to get it cooked like this. But, the air fryer does it too, but with much less oil.
    • Different seasoning options - We have used Italian seasoning to season the steak, but you can use your favourite seasoning blend.
    • Versatile - There are so many things you can serve this with, it's such a versatile side dish.

    What is an air fryer

Our air fryer is one of our favourite kitchen appliances, because it cooks our favourite meals quicker and healthier. They work by cooking food by rapidly circulating hot air around. It gives (most foods) a crispy texture with much less oil than frying or roasting. By cooking this way, the air circulation cooks food evenly and nothing sticks. See below in the FAQs for our recommendation of which air fryer is the best.

    Why use an air fryer?

    • Air fryers are a healthier way to cook food. You can get crispy food, like chips (fries), bacon and sausages with much less oil than frying or baking.
    • They are quick and easy to turn on and they heat up quickly, so you don't have to wait for an oven to heat up.
    • There is nothing worse than using your oven on a hot day, and heating up the whole kitchen. Using the air fryer stops this from happening.
    • They might take up a fair amount of space on your countertop, but they are so versatile that you will use them over and over again. They are very easy to clean too.
    • Using an air fryer means more space in the oven.

    Health benefits of beef

Beef can definitely play an important role in a balanced diet and using lean cuts is key for this. It can provide a lean source of protein, iron and eight essential vitamins and minerals. Beef is a significant provider of protein and is naturally low in sodium and contributes towards good health and wellbeing. Trim off any visible fat to make this lighter.

    Air fryer steak cooking time

This really is a personally preference, depending on how you like your steak cooked. However, we think medium rare is perfect for this this steak. Here are the internal temperatures and approximate times to cook your air fryer steak, depending on how you like it:

    • 52°C/125°F for rare (6-7 minutes)
    • 57°C/135°F for medium rare (7-9 minutes)
    • 63°/145°F for medium (10-13 minutes)
    • 66°/150°F for medium well (13-14 minutes)
    • 69°/155°F for well done (14-15 minutes)

What to serve with air fryer steak

We have served this with our Air Fryer Potato Wedges, however it also goes well with our Cheesy Potato Bake which is one of our favourites for total comfort food. You can also use it to make our Steak Tacos or Steak Salad. Here are some of our favourite side dishes that go perfectly with this air fryer steak:

    • Parmesan Truffle Fries
    • Hasselback Potatoes
    • Garlic Smashed Potatoes
    • Greek Rice
    • Garlic Spring Greens
    • Easy Roast Potatoes
    • Buttered Leeks
    • Mustard Potato Salad
    • Cheesy Garlic Bread
    • Roasted Tenderstem Broccoli
    • No Mayo Coleslaw
    • The BEST Air Fryer Chips
    • Greek Potatoes
    • Mediterranean Potato Salad
A bowl of salad topped with strips of medium rare steak.

    Storage

Store: If you have leftover steak, then you can store it in the fridge. Wrap tightly in foil and put in air tight containers and it will keep for up to 3 days.

Freeze: To store leftover steak for longer, you can freeze it. Cover it tightly in cling film and then put in freezer bags. It will keep in the freezer for 2 months for maximum freshness.

Defrost: You can defrost cooked steak in the fridge overnight.

Reheat: You can reheat it in a frying pan with a little oil.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best air fryer to use?

We can't rate highly enough the Power Air Fryer XL. The 5 litre capacity is big enough for cooking for the whole family and it can fry, grill, bake, sauté, roast and steam. There are simple touch screen controls and it heats up quickly and can cook your food up to 70% faster than a conventional oven. Also, it's dishwasher safe.

Do I need to preheat the air fryer first?

No, there is no need to preheat the air fryer for this recipe. If you want super crispy steak, then you could preheat it for 5 minutes first.

Does steak brown in the air fryer?

Yes, which is what we love about it. The hot, circulating air browns the outside of the steak, giving golden brown edges that is similar to a hard sear in a frying pan

Can you cook frozen steaks in the air fryer?

Yes, you can. It will take about 20 minutes, flipping half way through.

Are air fryer steaks gluten free?

Yes, as long as you make sure your seasoning is gluten free and there is no cross contamination, then this is gluten free.

Do you need to marinate the steaks first?

If you are short on time, then you don't have to. However, if you do have an hour extra, then it is worth it. It's important to do this if you are using a lean steak, because it will prevent it from drying out at a high heat.

Can you prepare air fryer steaks in advance?

Yes, you can marinate them and then keep them in the fridge until you are ready to cook. Bring them to room temperature before cooking for best results.

Do you need to turn steaks in the air fryer?

Yes, if you want an even sear on both sides, then flip the steak half way through the cooking time.

    Why isn't my steak cooked?

Well, they shouldn't be raw after this cooking time, however if they still aren't cooked to your liking then cook them for a few more minutes. Cooking times will vary depending on the steak you use, the thickness of it and your air fryer.

Why do you put butter on steak?

This is a popular way of serving steak. It is done not only because it creates a nice sauce when melted, but it helps to soften the charred exterior and makes the steak more tender. You cab rub the steak with melted butter instead of oil if you prefer.

How long should you leave steak to rest?

A steak only needs 5 minutes of rest time. The reason it needs to rest is because the juices need time to redistribute. Otherwise they will just leak out when sliced.

    Extra tips

    • You can use any steak you like for this recipe, however the better quality, the better it will taste.
    • Use steaks at room temperature of best results.
    • Make sure that you season the steak, as it really will make a difference to the finished flavour.
    • Make sure you don't overload your air fryer. Don't stack or overlap the steaks and don't exceed the maximum capacity of your air fryer. You can always cook them in batches. We cooked one steak at a time.
    • Make sure you allow the steaks to rest for at least 5 minutes.
