Babybel Cheese Monsters with a text overlay title.

Babybel Cheese Monsters might just be the easiest Halloween recipe you could make. You can't even call it a recipe - simply cut your Babybels into monster faces for an easy healthy snack this Halloween.

Four Babybel cheeses with the wax cut to make scary faces.

Babybel Halloween cheese is one of the first things we make every Halloween, and they are also a great spooky addition to any packed lunch.

These cute cheese monsters are as simple as slicing a few creepy/fun faces into the Babybel wax. They are fun served alongside a Halloween Fruit Platter too. Not everything has to be full of sugar at Halloween time.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Four Babybel cheeses and a bowl of edible eyes, both with text overlay labels.

A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

  • Babybel - The main ingredient. You can get a few different type of cheese Babybels, so feel free to use your favourite.
  • Edible eyes - You could carve the eyes, but at Halloween time we like to put edible eyes on EVERYTHING! You will need a little honey to act as glues to make these stick to the wax.

Variations

These Babybel cheese monsters are SO simple, that there aren't really too many ways that you can adapt them.

You could use some different fruits and vegetables to make hair, arms and legs though. Or even make a fruit and veggie scenery background for the cheese monsters to go on.

How To Make Babybel Cheese Monsters - Step by Step

A hand peeling wax off of a Babybel cheese.
  1. Step 1: Remove the outside wrapper to reveal the wax coated cheese. Remove the wax strip that goes round the centre of the cheese.

  1. Step 2: Using a small sharp knife, make different monster faces in the Babybels.
Someone using a teaspoon handle to apply honey to an edible eye.
  1. Step 3: Add a little honey to the edible eyes. Use the handle of a teaspoon for ease.

  1. Step 4: Stick them on the cheese, along with any of the cut out wax you might want to use (eyebrows, horns, wings, etc).

  1. Step 5: Repeat for as many cheeses you are making.

Serving Suggestions

We usually just serve these as a snack. However, they are also a great addition to our Halloween Platter which is what we serve every year at our kid's Halloween party.

Extra Tips

  • If you didn't want to use edible eyes (they are hard candy/sweets), then you could use adhesive googly eyes and they would come off when the wax coating is peeled off to eat.
  • If you want to get the kids involved in making their own, then you can get them to use a toothpick to mark out the spooky monster faces they want, and then a grown-up can use a small knife to fully cut them out.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to store cheese monsters

Once they have been made, they need to be stored in the fridge in an airtight container. They will keep for up to 3 days.

Is the wax coating on Babybel edible?

Whilst this is not recommended, the wax coating is considered "food safe". So, if you accidentally eat a little, then you should be fine.

Where can I buy edible eyes from?

At this time of year, most grocery stores stock them. However, we like to buy them in bulk as we use them in a lot of recipes. Check out these Edible Eyes on Amazon.
