Ingredients and Substitutions

All the ingredients needed to make this recipe, each with a text overlay label.

A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

  • Popcorn - You need plain popcorn kernels to make this. You could use a bag of microwave popcorn if you prefer.
  • Oil - We like using coconut oil to make popcorn. But you could use sunflower oil instead.
  • Chocolate - We used a mixture of milk and white chocolate. Feel free to use dark too as well.
  • Decorations - Anything with a Halloween theme goes. We used M&Ms, sprinkles and edible eyes.

Variations

Anything goes here! As long as it's kind of Halloween-y, then it will work. Think orange and purple, and anything spooky.

Some of our other favorite Halloween popcorn toppings include crumbled Oreos, Candy Corn, mini marshmallows and for some extra crunch some pretzels.

The key is to have a really good mix of colours for Halloween themed popcorn.

How To Make Halloween Popcorn - Step by Step

Popcorn kernels in a pan with oil.
  1. Step 1: Add the coconut oil to a large pan and melt. Put 3 kernels in and wait until they pop (about 3-4 minutes).
Add the rest of the kernels in an even layer, cover and remove from the heat for 30 seconds.
Popped corn in a large pan.
  1. Step 2: Put the popcorn back on the heat and shake as it pops. When the popping slows to around 5 seconds between each pop, take it off the heat.
Popcorn spread over a lined baking sheet.
  1. Step 3: Immediately spread it over a lined baking tray.
Two shot collage of chocolate in a bowl, before and after melting.
  1. Step 4: Melt the milk and white chocolate separately.
Melted chocolate drizzled over the popcorn.
  1. Step 5: Drizzle it all over the popcorn.
Halloween sprinkles added to the popcorn.
  1. Step 6: Add the sprinkles, M&Ms and edible eyes and put in the fridge until it has set.
  1. Step 7: It will be like popcorn bark, which can be snapped into smaller pieces and then stored in a jar.

Extra Tips

  • White chocolate can be a little difficult to melt, so you can add a little coconut oil to it to thin it out.
  • You can either melt the chocolate over boiling water on the stove or microwave it in intervals.
  • You don't have to drizzle the chocolate on top of this Halloween popcorn recipe, you can just put it all in a bowl together and mix it up.
  • All the mini toppings tend to fall to the bottom of the bowl/jar if they haven't stuck to any chocolate. So, make sure to give this spooky popcorn a good mix again before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to store

You can store Halloween popcorn in an airtight container for up to 4 days. It will start going stale after that.

Can I use microwave popcorn to make this?

Yes, you can! We have made our own popcorn, as the kids love to hear it pop. But, you can use a bag of microwave popcorn and then spread it on a baking sheet to add toppings. But make sure it is sweet/butter popcorn and not cheese popcorn.
