Halloween is a time full of treats (and tricks) for kids, so why not balance it out a bit with this Halloween Veggie Tray? Mini carrots arranged into a pumpkin with cucumber, olives and dip. This Halloween veggie platter is the perfect healthy addition to any Halloween party, and so easy to adapt.

Carrots arranged into a pumpkin shape with dips for eyes olives for a nose and cucumber for a mouth.

We have a kids Halloween party every year and whilst I love adding jelly worms to everything and decorating brownies in every spooky way I can, the kids have SO much sugar at this time of year. So, we try to balance that out with this pumpkin veggie tray which they LOVE.

Once you have the basic Jack-o'-lantern shape, which carrots are perfect for, it's so easy to adapt with different vegetables and dips. It's also a fun way to get kids to try new vegetables. Everything is better when it's Halloween themed, right?

Ingredients and Substitutions

All the ingredients needed for this recipe, each with a text overlay label.

A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

  • Carrots - Because they are orange, they are perfect for making a pumpkin veggie platter. We used baby carrots as the base of these Halloween veggies too, as they are easier to move around than sticks of carrot. You could add some purple carrots in there too.
  • Cucumber and olives - We used cucumber for the mouth and black olives for the nose, but we have given suggestions below for alternatives.
  • Celery - This is for the pumpkin stalk (stem).
  • Dips - We used our Greek Yogurt Ranch Dip and Tzatziki, but any of your favorite dips work.

Halloween Veggie Tray Variations

The great thing about a Halloween veggie tray is that there are SO many different ways to adapt it depending on what you know your kids would enjoy. We have lots of Halloween veggie platter ideas!

Because this is a veggie pumpkin tray, the carrots are kind of essential. But, when it comes to creating the mouth and nose, there are lots of options. Other things that work well are mini bell pepper (this works for the nose), cheese cubes, tomatoes, broccoli, radish or even some cooked sausage.

We like using creamy dips, as they are bright and look like if a jack-o-lantern was lit. However, other dips that work well are our Sour Cream and Chive Dip, Creamy Cottage Cheese Dip, Whipped Feta or Butter Bean Hummus. But your favorite veggie dip works.

How To Make A Halloween Pumpkin Veggie Tray

A Halloween veggie tray surrounded by cobwebs and small plastic pumpkins.
  1. Step One: Arrange the mini carrots in a pumpkin shape, leaving space for eyes, nose and a mouth. It doesn't matter if it's a bit of a mess, because if you carve a pumpkin anything like I do, then it always looks a bit of a mess.
  1. Step two: Add some dips to two small bowls and put them in the space for the eyes.
  1. Step three: Add the cucumber slices to make a mouth, the olives for the nose and add the celery stalk at the top.

Serving Suggestions

These are a must at any Halloween party! Some of our other favorite additions to a Halloween party table are these Halloween Pizzas with some Halloween Tortilla Chips.

Followed by some Chocolate Covered Apple Slices of course!

Extra Tips

  • You can make this Halloween veggie tray as big or as small as you like. Just scale up or down the carrots to make a bigger or smaller pumpkin veggie tray.
  • Prepare and wash the vegetables just before you are going to use them, so they are as fresh and crisp as possible.
  • You could prepare the dips in advance to save some time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to store leftovers

If you have leftovers, then the vegetables can be stored in an air tight container for up to 4 days. We then have them for snacks or add them to the kid's lunch boxes. The dips need to be stored separately and put into individual air tight containers where they will keep for up to 2 days.

Can I do the same with fruit?

Yes, you can make a fruit version of this by using orange segments rather than carrots and use berries to make the face. Then use our Cream Cheese Fruit Dip as the eyes.

What do I serve a pumpkin veggie tray on?

We used a large circular tray/serving board for this. This Serving Board would be perfect.
