Chocolate and orange is a classic and delicious food combination and these Chocolate Covered Oranges are a delicious winter treat. So easy to make, as it's just orange slices dipped in chocolate half way and then sprinkled with crushed nuts. Ready in under 30 minutes and a lighter way to get a sweet fix.

Thirty one satsuma segments, half dipped in chocolate all on a wooden board.

About These Chocolate Covered Oranges

We love fruit dipped in chocolate, but these orange slices in dark chocolate is probably our favourite. Especially when coated in some crushed pistachios for a festive twist.

When we need a chocolate fix, a chocolate dipped orange is our go-to. You can either fully coat it or dip it half way like we have to keep it a little lighter. Chocolate covered oranges also make a really easy homemade Christmas gift too.

Ingredients and Substitutions

All the ingredients needed to make this recipe each with a text overlay label.

A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

  • Oranges - We used satsumas. But clementine slices or larger orange slices work well too.
  • Chocolate - We used dark chocolate as it has so many benefits, but any chocolate works here. Just try to use the best quality possible.
  • Coconut Oil - This is added to make the chocolate coating shinier and it is also less likely to break as you bite into it.
  • Pistachios - We love to add something crunchy to the melted chocolate. Any nuts or seeds will work.

Chocolate Dipped Oranges Variations

The chocolate in the main ingredient here (although the oranges give the most flavour) and any chocolate will work just make sure it is good quality. Not only does it taste better, but it melts better.

Milk, dark or white chocolate work. You could even use a flavoured chocolate.

We have half dipped ours, as we think they look really pretty. But you could fully dip the chocolate orange slices or you could drizzle the chocolate over in a random pattern.

When it comes to the sprinkle toppings, there are so many options. We added crushed pistachios as they are a festive ingredient.

But any nuts will work like walnuts, pecans or peanuts. Just make sure they are finely crushed so they stick to the melted chocolate.

Our kids also like sprinkles on these chocolate oranges.

You can keep it simple and just sprinkle some crushed sea salt over the melted chocolate as the salt really brings out the sweetness of the chocolate.

  1. Step four: Dip each satsuma segment in the chocolate and put back onto the lined tray. Sprinkle with the crushed pistachios.

Extra Tips

  • When you are melting the chocolate, do it for 30 seconds at a time, stirring between each time, so the chocolate doesn't burn.
  • You can also melt the chocolate in a saucepan if you prefer.
  • Any size oranges work for chocolate covered orange slices, but we prefer little oranges for a bitesized snack.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to store leftovers?

Any leftovers of these dark chocolate oranges can be stored in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. These will not freeze well.

Do these make good gifts?

Yes, and we love giving homemade gifts. You can put these in little cellophane gift bags and tie with pretty ribbon. They make a great addition to a homemade food hamper.

Why is my chocolate so hard after melted?

If you have melted your chocolate and it is hard, then it is likely that it has burnt or seized. This is why we recommend melting it 30 seconds at a time and stirring each time. If you notice it starting to burn, then you might be able to save it by whisking in a teaspoon of water.
