This chocolate fruit dip recipe will satisfy your sweet tooth and also give you a protein boost too. A mixture of Greek yogurt, cacao and maple syrup, it's the perfect dip for fruit skewers and to encourage kids to eat more fruit. You could also just eat this Greek yogurt fruit dip with a spoon!

A bowl of chocolate dip with a fruit kebab in it and more fruit kebabs nearby.

There are 14 grams of protein in one serving of this fruit dip recipe, so it's a good way to get some extra protein into your diet. If you struggle to eat enough fruit, then this healthy chocolate fruit dip is the way to go.

A great Greek yogurt dip, with some cacao and maple syrup makes a rich and creamy dip that feels far more indulgent than it actually is.

Ingredients and Substitutions

All the ingredients needed to make this recipe each with a text overlay label.

A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

  • Yogurt - Opt for plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt for a creamy texture and a protein boost. I used 0% fat, but you can use 2% or 5%. The higher the fat percentage the creamier it will be.
  • Cacao - Provides rich chocolate flavour without added sugar. You could use unsweetened cocoa powder instead, but we prefer the benefits of cacao.
  • Vanilla - Vanilla extract adds depth, but if you don't have it, you can omit it or use a different flavour extract like almond or coconut for a unique twist.
  • Maple syrup - This adds natural sweeteners to balance the cacao's bitterness and the tartness from the yogurt. You can use any preferred sweetener like agave nectar, stevia, or coconut sugar. Adjust the amount to taste.
  • Chocolate chips - You don't HAVE to add these, but why wouldn't you? We love these Sugar Free Chocolate Chips. They add some extra chocolatey flavour, and texture to this chocolate fruit dip.

Variations

Higher in protein - If you want to make this healthy chocolate fruit dip even higher in protein, then why not blend up some cottage cheese and mix it into the yogurt. You won't even taste it.

Add a scoop of chocolate protein powder to the Greek yogurt fruit dip mixture. You may need to add a bit more yogurt or a splash of almond milk to maintain the desired consistency.

Nut butter - You can stir in almond, peanut, or cashew butter and it adds creaminess and a nutty flavour to the sweet greek yogurt dip.

Seeds - 1 tablespoon of chia seeds for added texture and a nutritional boost. You could add flax seeds too.

Spice - ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon adds a warm, spicy note.

Extra Tips

  • You can add a tiny pinch of salt, to elevate all the other flavours.
  • Ensure your yogurt has been left out of the fridge for a couple of minutes for easier mixing.
  • Sift the cacao powder before adding to prevent lumps.
  • For best results, refrigerate the dip for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavours to meld.
  • Stir in 1-2 tablespoons of melted dark chocolate for an even richer, more indulgent dip.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to store.

You can make this healthy fruit dip a day in advance. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Just give it a good stir before serving.

Can I use regular yogurt instead of Greek yogurt?

Yes, but the dip will be thinner. To achieve a similar thickness, strain regular yogurt using a cheesecloth to remove excess whey.

Can I make this vegan?

Substitute Greek yogurt with coconut yogurt or almond yogurt for a dairy-free option. Use maple syrup or agave nectar, rather than honey.
