Learn how to make homemade almond milk and you will save yourself SO much money. It's much healthier than a lot of shop bought options, as it doesn't have any chemicals or unnecessary ingredients, and it's super simple to make. All you need is almonds and water and then blend it all up. You can even make different flavour almond milks too!

We get through so much almond milk. We use it to make creamy porridge, in a smoothie and for our morning coffee. Not only is making it ourselves saving us money, but it is reducing the amount of packaging we are having to recycle. It really couldn't be easier to make this dairy-free, vegan nut milk.

Why you will love it

  • Saves money - Almond milk isn't cheap to buy, but it's really cheap to make, especially if you can buy almonds in bulk.
  • Less packaging - If you are looking to cut down on packaging and recycling, then making your own nut milk is a good place to start.
  • Easy to make - It's as simple as blending everything together and straining it.
  • Can only make what you need - Just need a small batch of almond milk? Then you can make as much as you need, which reduces waste.
  • Flavoured milk - We love a flavoured almond milk. Vanilla, cinnamon, chocolate - there are so many options.

Ingredients needed

  • Almonds - We used skin on almonds.
  • Water - This is what the almonds are blended with to make the nut milk.
  • Maple syrup - You don't have to use this, but we like our homemade almond milk to have a touch of sweetness to it. You can use another liquid sweetener if you prefer. If you wanted to sweeten it with fruit, then you can blend some pitted dates in to it.

How to make almond milk - Step by step

One: Place the almonds in a large bowl and then cover with water. Leave them to soak for at least 4 hours but overnight is best (they will absorb some of the water) and then drain and fully rinse them.

Two: Put the soaked almonds in a high powered blender, along with the water for blending, the sweetener you are using and any other flavours.

Three: Blend on high for around 3 minutes until it is smooth and creamy.

Four: Using a nut-milk bag, cheesecloth or fine mesh sieve, strain the almond milk into a bowl. Then transfer that into an airtight container and keep it in the fridge.

Variations

Almond milk is a good one to start out with, but you can really use any nuts. Cashew nuts make a super creamy milk, which some people prefer, and you don't need to strain it like this almond milk.

Some people are more sensitive to cashews and also they tend to be more expensive than almonds, so we often just make almond milk and then buy cashew milk if we want it.

How to use leftover almond pulp

We don't like waste, but once you have strained the almond milk there will be some pulp leftover. That doesn't mean it has to be thrown though.

You can use the leftover almond pulp to make little energy bites. Simply blend it with dates and some of your other favourite ingredients like cocoa, coconut and some orange essence and you have yourself some no-waste chocolate orange energy bites.

You could also just add it to your morning oats or smoothie if you wanted something easier.

Almond Milk Flavours

The great thing about homemade almond milk is that you can add any flavours you want. The recipe here is just basic almond milk, but when you put the almond and water in the blender, you can add lots of other flavours to.

For example, vanilla, cocoa, cinnamon or nutmeg.

Storage

Homemade almond milk will keep in the fridge in an airtight container for around 3-4 days, but we usually make enough to last around 2 days. It's so quick and easy to make, it's best just to make what you need.

FAQs

What almonds are best for almond milk?

You want to avoid roasted and salted almonds and go with raw, skin on almonds. If you want a little salt added to your milk (we don't, as we don't think it needs it), then you can add it at the end.

Do the almonds need soaking first?

Yes, and this is a really important step as it will make such a difference. I would recommend soaking them overnight for about 8 hours, but if you don't have that amount of time then go with 4 hours minimum.
The longer you soak them for, the creamier the milk it goes to be. So, if you can soak them for 2 days, then even better!

Is almond milk good for you?

You might be wondering what almond milk benefits there are. If you are on a plant based diet, then almond milk is a good substitution. It is also low in calories.

Ingredients

  • 200 g (1.5 cups) Almonds
  • Water - for soaking; enough to cover all the almonds
  • 1000 ml (4.25 cups) Cold water - for blending
  • 2 tablespoon Maple syrup

    Great and easy recipe, we'll have to try it.

    My husband makes Oatmeal milk a couple of times a week. We then use the milk for our fruit smoothies and some veggie mixtures.
