Ingredients and Substitutions
A full ingredients list, along with US Customary and Metric measurements, can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.
- Fish - We used cod for this air fryer fish tacos recipe, however any white fish will work.
- Oil - This is brushed on the cod so the seasoning will stick to it and helps to give it some nice crispy edges too.
- Slaw - The base of the fish tacos. Try our BEST Homemade Coleslaw or even our Mexican Coleslaw for extra flavour.
- Soft mini tortillas - You can use corn or flour tortillas. Make sure you warm them before using.
- Coriander - Sprinkle over before serving for some freshness.
- Lime - This is added with the oil on to the fish to add some freshness.
- Hot sauce - Feel free to smother these tacos with your favourite hot sauce.
- Jalapenos - The spicier the better for us. Add pickled jalapenos to the tacos of those people that want some spice.
- Seasoning - We used a mixture of chilli, oregano, garlic, paprika, cayenne, cumin, salt and pepper. But a Fajita Seasoning blend or Peri Peri blend will both work too.
Variations
Breaded - We wanted to keep these fish tacos in the air fryer light, so we didn't bread the fish. However, you could coat the cod in flour, then dip in whisked egg and coat in panko breadcrumbs before cooking.
Cheese - Fish and cheese isn't traditionally served together, but there is no reason why you can't add some to these air fryer fish tacos. We would recommend some crumbled feta as a little goes a long way.
Sauce - If you want to drizzle some sauce over the tacos when they are made, then why not try our Easy Jalapeno Sauce? Or for something creamy our Subway copycat Chipotle Southwest Sauce is really good.
Avocado - You can't go wrong with some avocado in a taco. A few slices adds a lovely creaminess.
How to Make Air fryer Fish Tacos - Step by Step
- Step one: Pat the cod fillets dry with kitchen paper. Brush with the oil and squeeze over the lime juice. Sprinkle over the spice blend and rub in with your hands.
- Step two: Cook the seasoned cod in your air fryer at 200°C for 8-10 minutes.
- Step three: Heat the tortillas in a dry pan. Add the slaw, flaked cod, hot sauce, jalapenos and coriander (cilantro).
Serving Suggestions
All of your favourite Mexican sides go well with these cod tacos. We love some Air Fryer Tortilla Chips dipped into our Restaurant Style Salsa.
Of course you have got to have some Guacamole and you also can't beat some Quick Pickled Red Onions on top of tacos for that balance of sweet and sour flavour.
Why not skip the flour tortillas and serve this up as a fish taco bowl? Add loads of crispy lettuce as the base and then load it up with everything else.
Why not make our Burger Bowl, but with the seasoned cod instead of the burger?
Storage
Assembled tacos do not store well, so try to only make as much as you need to eat right away. However, you can store leftover cooked cod in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
Extra Tips
- Pat the cod loins dry with a paper towel before using them.
- It is important not to overcrowd the air fryer basket when cooking cod. This can prevent the fish from cooking through evenly and may cause it to become overcooked or undercooked. Instead, cook the fish in batches if necessary to ensure that it cooks through perfectly every time.
- Make sure the cod fillets are a similar thickness, so that they all cook at an even rate.
- Make sure you spray your air fryer basket with some oil first, as you don't want the cod to stick to it and all fall apart.
- Don't flip the cod in the air fryer. Unless it is fully cooked, it will fall apart.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, these are easy to make gluten free. Just use corn tortillas and make sure there is no cross contamination.
You can use frozen cod for this recipe, but you will need to thaw it first. You can do this in the fridge overnight.
Cooking time will depend on how thick your cod fillet is, and also your air fryer as they all cook differently. Ours was perfectly cooked at 8 minutes, but you might want to check it at 6 minutes.
Cod should be cooked to an internal temperature of 63°C/145°F. The best way to test the internal temperature is with a meat thermometer. If you don't have a thermometer, you can cut gently into the thickest part of the fish.
