This is a really simple smoothie, but far from boring. I usually have more than just a smoothie for breakfast, but if that is all I have time for then this is the one I choose. It's nutrient dense and pretty filling with the oats and cashew butter. You could add some flax or chia seeds too.
This smoothie is kid approved too. They love the colour, it's nice and sweet and the flavours aren't too overpowering either. It's also a great way to use up lots of blueberries.

Why You Will Love It
- Quick - This blueberry smoothie is ready in under 5 minutes.
- Filling - We have added oats to this smoothie, which makes it much more of a filling meal.
- Use frozen fruit - You can easily use frozen fruit in this recipe, so it can be enjoyed all year round and not just when blueberries are in season.
- Kid friendly - Looking for more ways to get fruit into your kids diet. They will love this! They can help to make it too.
Ingredients and Substitutions

- Banana - This helps to thicken the smoothie, but it doesn't add too much of an overpowering banana flavour. If you want a thicker smoothie, then use frozen bananas.
- Blueberries - The star of the smoothie. For the best flavour, use fresh and in season blueberries.
- Almond milk - Any milk will work in this recipe, we just happened to have some almond milk that needed using.
- Greek yogurt - This also helps to thicken the smoothie. Use full fat for more flavour, or use reduce or 0% fat if you want to lower the calories.
- Honey or maple syrup - This blueberry smoothie is naturally sweet from the banana and blueberries, however this adds a little extra sweetness. It is optional though.
- Cashew butter - This adds some protein, and texture. You could use almond or peanut butter instead.
- Oats - An easy way to make a smoothie thicker and more filling. Adding oats to a smoothie makes it feel more like a meal.
Variations
This really is a super creamy smoothie, and there are a few different ingredients to thank for that. Banana is always a must for a creamy smoothie, but we added some Greek yogurt too. Also, the blended up oats add an extra layer of creaminess, as well as making it more filling.
If you aren't a fan of banana, then you could add half an avocado instead. Avocado doesn't really have a taste, but you will lose some of the sweetness that the banana gave. Make this even creamier by using a frozen banana.
If you wanted a mixture of fruit, then add some raspberries, strawberries and blackberries into it too. It might change the colour of it though.
If you didn't want to use milk in this smoothie, then you could swap it for apple juice. It would be a bit thinner though.
How to Make a Blueberry Smoothie

- Step 1: Put all of the ingredients into a blender.

- Step 2: Blend until smooth.
Time Saving Tip
Make smoothie bags ahead of time and store them in the freezer for quick and easy breakfasts and snacks. In a freezer bag, add the chunks of banana and blueberries and then just add them to the blender with the rest of the ingredients when you are ready to serve.

Storage
If you make a bit too much smoothie, or can't finish it, then you can store this in the fridge for a day. Just make sure to give it a good stir before you drink it again. We wouldn't recommend freezing it.
Dannii's Top Tips
- Make this even creamier by using a frozen banana or adding a splash of coconut milk.
- Not a fan of banana? Use half an avocado instead.
- Make this smoothie vegan by using coconut yogurt and maple syrup.
- Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for a warm flavour. It kind of tastes like a blueberry pie in a jar.

Frequently Asked Questions
There are 375 calories in this smoothie. That might sound like a lot for a smoothie, but that's because of the oats and cashew butter which helps to make it really filling.
No, it doesn't. Blended blueberries are still just as nutritious.
As long as you make sure the oats you are using are certified gluten free, and there is no cross contamination, then this can be gluten free.
If you want to make this a vegan blueberry smoothie, then just swap the Greek yogurt for coconut or soya yogurt and use maple syrup instead of honey.
Another great vegan addition to this smoothie is a splash of coconut milk. It makes it even creamier, and of course with a little hint of coconut.
Using frozen fruit is an easy way to thicken a blueberry smoothie. You could also use coconut milk that would also add a lovely tropical flavour.

Isn't that a pretty colour? Blueberries are great for smoothies as they do not have hard pips!
Claire @foodiequine says
Very jealous of your purple Nutribullet. I have a bit of a thing about purple and I really love smoothies. Strangely I don't think I've ever made one with blueberries. Must rectify!
Anita-Clare Field says
We love our nutribullet. I even convinced my 88 year old father in law to get one, our favourite is blueberry and raspberry with yoghurt and porridge oats. I love the idea of nut milk in it, but i'll pass on the Banana. Delicious. I think I'll go make one right now.

I love blueberries but have never had them in a smoothie before so really have to rectify this as your's looks lush. I saw the range of Nutribullets on Ideal World TV this morning and I'm thinking I really need something like this as I'm making more and more smoothies/milkshakes these days with just my old stick blender!
Dannii says
It is SO much easier than a stick blender. I would really recommend getting one - it's worth the investment.

I never think to make myself a smoothie, but it's such a great idea when you're feeling like you need a healthy pick me up, as you say! Blueberries are one of my favourite fruits, as well, so I'm going to make myself one of these soon!
