Ingredients and substitutions
- Halloumi - 1 whole block is used for this halloumi taco recipe. You should be able to find it in all good supermarkets in the cheese section. You can follow our recipe for How To Cook Halloumi or Air Fryer Halloumi for these tacos.
- Tortillas - We used soft corn tortillas. You could swap them for hard shells if you prefer, but we find them harder to eat. Corn tortillas keep the dish gluten free.
- Greek yogurt - This is the base of the creamy sauce. You could use mayonnaise or sour cream, but we kept it light with greek yogurt.
- Chipotle sauce - This is what makes the creamy sauce spicy. You could use your favourite chilli sauce though.
- Lime juice - This freshens up the sauce a little.
- Fresh coriander (cilantro) - A must in a taco, but if you don't like it then you can of course leave it out.
- Shredded lettuce - We added some little gem for some crunch.
- Cherry tomatoes - For some freshness and colour.

What is Halloumi?
If you haven’t had halloumi before, then you are seriously missing out and this is one of our favourite halloumi recipes. You are in for a treat!
The semi-hard cheese originated from Cyprus and although it doesn’t taste like much straight from the packet, it tastes amazing once cooked and has a whole different texture.
It can be made from cow, sheep or goat’s cheese, and has quite a salty flavour – which is what we love about it. Because of its high melting point, it’s great for grilling, baking and frying and it keeps its shape making it perfect for halloumi fries.
Variations
Vegetables - We love anything that we can bulk out with veggies and tacos are definitely that. Why not add some charred corn or even some Air Fryer Roasted Vegetables? For some added crunch, add our Homemade Coleslaw to the halloumi tacos or Quick Pickled Red Onions.
Sauce - To keep the sauce spicy, but with a little sweetness, why not add sweet chilli sauce to the Greek yogurt instead? You could always use a salsa instead and we recommend our Restaurant Style Salsa or Pineapple Salsa. Our Jalapeno Sauce is also really good on them.
Avocado - I know, I am just as shocked as you are that we haven't put avocado in these halloumi tacos (it goes so well with halloumi too), but we had run out. So, feel free to add some diced avocado or Guacamole.
Serving suggestions
We love a couple of these halloumi tacos as a light lunch. However, if you wanted to serve them as more of a Mexican feast, then we have got you convered.
Some tortilla chips on the side is a must, and why not make your own. Try our Baked Tortilla Chips or Air Fryer Tortilla Chips.
If you want some extra crunch on the side, then you can't go wrong with our Mexican Coleslaw or Air Fryer Corn on the Cob.
Extra tips
- Can't find halloumi? Use panner instead!
- To make these gluten free, then use gluten free tortillas and make sure there is no cross contamination.
- Why not swap halloumi for tofu?
- These are great to make on the BBQ for easy summer meals for feeding a crowd.
- If you want to add a little bit of sweetness to the halloumi, then drizzle it with a little bit of honey before it has finished cooking.
- If you want to make a vegan version, then VioLIfe have a great vegan alternative to halloumi.
- Make sure you toast your tortillas in a dry pan before using them - it makes a difference and only takes 30 seconds. Alternatively, you can wrap the tortillas in foil and heat them in the oven at 180°C/160°C(fan)/350°F/Gas 4 for 10 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Halloumi is high in protein and calcium, but it is also high in fat and salt, so keep an eye on portion size.
Yes! If you have any leftover block of halloumi, you can put it in a freezer bag and it will store for up to 2 months.
You can prepare the salad and sauce in advance and keep them in the fridge until you are ready to cook the halloumi.
We recommend eating these tacos straight away. Cooked halloumi isn't great once it has cooled, as it totally changes the texture. So only make as many as you can eat.
